1977 212 squeal in forward and reverse.

I picked it up a few months ago and finally got a good 4 hours of snow blowing out of it.

It started to make a slight rubberish burning smell so I hurried up and finished blowing what I could. I went back out to see if letting it sit would do anything.

It now squeals in reverse and forward but it doesn't go too fast. The belts do seem ok from inspecting them.

Could this be a bad clutch or do I need to adjust a tensioner?

It's rather cold out so could something be frozen too? Also doesn't seem like there's much resistance on the variator. It worked great all day besides this.

With the parking brake off I can spin the belt by hand. Could It just be a weak spring on the tensioner?

Just went out and I pressed the brake peddle, now it's stuck down. It's 9* outside so I'm going to grab a heater and warm it up for a while. I believe it may be frozen underneath and causing these problems.

Thanks, got heat on it now, hope its just frozen.

The variator does work now though, there's resistance in the lever.

Another update, all belts are where there suppose to be. The brake lever is still stuck, took the rear right wheel off and hit the brake arm a few times. Didn't even budge. So it looks like I must have a rear end problem? Guy before me just changed out the rear oil with amsoil.

Got the brake unjamed the peddle was stuck. Going to try to replace both drive belts tomorrow and see if that solves the problem. They only look slightly glazed but that might be enough?

When you replace the drive belts, be sure you buy JD belts. Aftermarket belts aren't spec to JD's specifications and will cause you problems, quickly. I'm sure the brake being stuck was your problem. While you're in the process of changing belts, now would be a good time to lube your variator. Do you have a manual? They're almost essential when working on the gear drives.

Yup I already have JD spares from the previous owner. It's possible that the brake was the problem, it was a long night. I don't think I have a manual, is there a PDF for it online? JD have them for a fair price?

JD has the manuals, but they're not cheap. You can either get a paper version or a CD. They're well worth the money if you plan on keeping the tractor. I do have a pdf one, but it's missing some sections. PM me your email address and I will send what I have.
