i need input on tiller options for my x758. can any one tell me pros and cons between Frontier /JohnDeere models and what will fit my tractor ? thanks for any help
It made mincemeat of my clay soil; it's like walking on Cool Whip (at least where the plants are).
The big measurements of a tiller are shaft speed (540 RPM seems to be standard) but the gearbox can drive the tine shaft at different speeds. Also, some tillers have 6 tines. I think my Frontier has 4 tines, and that's kinda standard. A "reverse" tiller runs backwards, i.e. it will pull your tractor backwards as opposed to pushing it. Also, some are gear driven and some are chain driven. Slip clutch or shear bolts?
I think there are tillers just as good as my Frontier, for less money. Land Pride and King Kutter come to mind.
I'm guessing that will fit your X series, but ask around. You gonna have enough lift height? How about room to connect and disconnect the PTO? I don't know of anything smaller than a 48" tiller, but they sure get bigger!
Well I have both a 42inch Hydraulic tiller & a 647 tiller. The 647 was bought with a 1025R. But it works great on My X748. I almost bought a 42inch Frontier tiller with the 1025R But the wait time for a frontier tiller was rather Long last year. So I opted for the 647. I have had the 42inch Hydraulic tiller for 14 years now used on Both My X485 & Now My X748. But I say If You Have a Rear PTO on your X758 go with a PTO driven tiller of any Brand and skip the 42inch Hydraulic tiller(the Hydraulic tiller run off a PTO Pump off Mid PTO) But after using it for 12 of the 14 years of ownership. I love the ease of Mounting a rear PTO driven tiller. The Frontier tillers are Made by Woods for Deere. The other reason I like the Rear PTO driven tiller is because I can Mow down the Garden & till in one Pass during the fall. Or If I just need to do a quick tilling Job I can Lock My deck Up and use the tiller. Not very quick to mount the Hydraulic tiller and if You Have a auto connect deck You will have to remove the auto connect apparatus to Mount the PTO Pump. So that's a 2nd reason I say skip the 42inch Hydraulic driven tiller. I wouldn't Get anything bigger Than a 50inch tiller for Your X758 either. :bigthumb:
Have the 48" Frontier tiller with the slip clutch for my 1025r
Have about 6 hours on it so far . . . love it . . . hit a few larger 4 to 6 inch stones and no problems . . . it chewed roots about 2 inches in diameter and bounded over larger roots which I later cut with the backhoe
I have a Frontier 1149 tiller mounted on my 1025R iMatch hitch.
I’ve owned it a few months but just now getting around to installing the PTO shaft for the first time.
Does anyone know the proper diameter of the friction clutch at the tiller end?
The shaft my dealer delivered looks to be 6 3/4” diameter and seems too big to slide over the splines. If it somehow were to slide on, I can’t imagine there would be over 1/8” clearance between the clutch and tiller housing. It also seems like it will be very close to being too long.
Thanks.

PTO shafts are not made to fit. You'll have to cut it to proper length or take the tractor and tiller to the dealer for fitting.
