    John deere 108

Anybody have any good ideas where to find an original engine for a model 108? I have been looking just a little bit and cant seem to come up with anything close to a model 191707 briggs. I know T-Mo(Terry) has said it may be a hard task to find an engine. I bought this tractor in non running condition for $25, but it has a 12.5 hp briggs in it not running, which I would like to bring this one back to original. I know these tractors arent collectable now, but if I keep it long enough some day it may be collectable. I know I havent seen a whole lot of the model 108 so I like the ones I dont see very often. Any info would be appreciated.

    Thanks a lot,
    Blake

    Blake,
You might be interested in some of these brochures, especially 1979 full line, the 1980 one, and the 1985 as all will have the 108 in it. John Deere Lawn & Garden Tractor Brochures from 1960, 1970, 1980, & 1990′s :: John Deere TechTalk – The Source for John Deere Technical Information

As for engine, try used, even if you have to do a rebuild. Another thing to consider is JD rear engine riders as some of them used the same engine. Or finding a 108 with a bad transmission, etc.

    Terry,
Thanks for the brochures! I have been searching for a S82,68, and 108 used engine. Cant seem to come up with anything yet. I think those RERs have 8hp vertical shaft briggs in them as well. I will just have to play the waiting game. Thought id throw it out there for the gtt atmosphere to give me some plausible possibilities. Thanks a lot!

    Blake,
The R72 also has a 8 hp vertical shaft Briggs in them. I have two R72s right now that I need to get running, both are sparkless.

    Terry,

You are correct. I have a R72.. duhhh. I also picked up a model 100 last night which is complete but missing a couple of parts to the engine like mag/ stator components. So I am hoping that when I replace those items this 100 will run well. The r72 I have needs a new throttle shaft, but otherwise runs well. Still need to find another engine for my little 108!

    Blake,
What was you going to do with that 100? Interested in trading it for two R72s?

I found a 70 on CL last week, looks complete, no spark though. I'm just leery about Tecumsehs though.

    Terry,

I actually have always been intrigued by a 100. AND my neighbor said hes only selling it to me because he thinks it will be safe to stay in the area that way. I did tell him I would do my best to get it going and make it a showpiece. His grandpa bought it brand new and used it about two years and took it apart and its sat ever since...So I kind of am obligated to keep it. I think it would be a fairly easy resto. Just need to get the engine going first. I posted on wfm, but wondered if anybody had any pics of under the flywheel on these 8hp? I guess I can take the flywheel off of that r72 to find out exactly what its sposed to look like, but I am hopeful somebody can send me a pic before I have to do all that work! While looking at it last night I seen that the stator was only half there, BUT i looked at my tech manual and it looks kind of like these only had a half moon stator to begin with. I will hopefully find out sooner or later.

    I have 2 60's, a 70, a 55, 3 56's(one's a parts donor),a 57, and a 66. Seems like i am always messing with points/carbs/ and so on. Dang tecumsehs. But a model 100 w/ that briggs I would think would be a cool machine.

100s are cool machines. I know of where one is, but the guy says he will fix it (it's been sitting in one spot for years).

    I found this on ebay-
1985 John Deere R72 Riding Mower Briggs Stratton 400cc 4 Stroke Engine | eBay
any idea if it would work? My instincts say it would match, but then again I dont know if there are in fact any differences in the R72 engine to the 108 engine.

Here are some pics of the 100. took almost 2 hours of pressure washing last night to get all the oil/ grass buildup/ mouse residue off of her! I think you can tell which pics show before and after the wash.

and dont worry, I dont use that crescent wrench in the pic for anything technical. I was using it last night to see if the 100 would even turn over or if it was stuck, which it did turn over freely and oil was moving in sump so it looks like everything is ok internally(thank the good lord!) Now I will get the carb cleaned and put some new parts into it and put new ignition system into it as it looks like it could use new parts. the old are pretty corroded and rusted. I cant believe it, but it seems to be all there!
