    3010(20) vs 2640 - which one?

    I'm mulling over the idea of having a backup tractor for my JD5115M. Would need it to run my Kuhn MoCo (55hp min) and JD 458 SS round baler (55hp min). Have a neighbor that's retiring and is selling off his hay equip. He's got a ~4,000 hr JD2640 and a ~10,000hr JD3010 with a ~5,000 hr 3020 engine kit.

    I've worked the 2640 and it's a solid tractor that could use a front end rebuild. Collar shift 8x4 trans. Rebuilt front hyd pump. Good rubber. New clutch and pressure plate ~500hrs. ago.

    Never ran the 3010. Been professionally painted. Synchro trans. Rear SCV's rebuilt. Engine is tired. Needs an inframe overhaul at the very least - he'll tell you that - and new battery boxes. New rubber all around.

    The 3010 is his JD435 round baler tractor. He likes the synchro pulling that baler.

    My baler is less of a HP hog than the MoCo. I used to start the MoCo with my 5075M (60hp @ pto) around 1,850-1,900rpm and it would pull the tractor down to 900-1,000rpm before the tractor would "catch-up" and roll the mower!

    I could be off the mark here.... But, if I had to ballpark a guess on what he'd want for the tractors, I'd think $7,500 for the 3010 and maybe $10,000 for the 2640. (This is Alaska - and it costs me ~$4,000 to "fetch" a tractor!)

    Whadya all think? 2640 or the 3010? Oh yeah, both wide front ends.

    I see on tractordata.com, both are rated at 77hp. I am not able to see, test drive or hear the tractors, but from the prices you quoted, I am leaning more towards the 2640. I say that, because of the fewer hrs and years. Granted, you say the front end needs rebuilt, but you can do that yourself. Makes me wonder how much maintenance was done on his equipment, as a hyd pump and front end should not have gone bad so quickly. Just remember, "You can always spend money, but not always make it".

    He bought the tractor (2640) from his brother. So, he might be 2nd-3rd owner... Not sure. Yeah, I'm not that put off about the tie-rods, etc. He's very particular about his equipment and will usually replace before failure.

    He's in his 70's and wants to do some "walk-abouts" with his wife while everything is still good with both of them!

    It is alot EASIER to spend - than make it! For sure!

    On the way home after feeding the neighbors pigs; it occurred to me that neither of those tractors will currently work with the 458 baler computer....

    Both are great tractors. It comes down to whether you want a utility(2640) or row crop(3010). If I had to pick between the two, I might choose the 3010, but that is my preference. The only downfall of the 3010 is the need for overhaul. EVen if you can do it yourself, you will end up with considerable money in the rebuild. In my experience the 3010 is probably a more durable tractor. Clutches tend to last longer, front ends hold up better, synchro trans vs collar shift...

    The 3020 was probably my favorite tractor growing up. But... The overhaul cost has me worried. As well, I have noted that it's getting pretty hard to track down parts for the 3020.. Like crankshafts or cylinder heads or a replacement block. Never mind the 3010.

    The synchro trans is a real plus, though.

    3010 is a flat deck(operator is up out of heat/dust more than 2640) with a synchronized shift between 2 forward gears & reverse. 2640 is straddle mount which is hotter operator station with no synchronizes but could be optioned with hyd hi-lo or reverser. On hyd systems the 3010 is hands down more reliable. 2640 engine is more peppy plus if need arises many replacement engines are available. 3010 has an engine that is orphaned only to 3010/3020 models plus has a tiny pto shift pin that can bend/break requiring a tractor split UNLESS one wants to drill hole in trans case to R&R pin. Both require older JD male hyd tips or adapters if they haven't been converted to ISO couplers. 2640 has had 13+ less birthdays than a 3010.

    Why won't the monitor work with either tractor? I've baled for years with a 530 baler, sometimes pulling it with a 3020 and had no issues with its monitor, but the tractor is a 12v system. Is the 3010 a 24v, as I think some of them could have been? After reading the other posts here, I would still vote for the 2640. I've ran a 2630 for a few years, but ended up trading it in for a 4240.

    That's why the 3010 is hooked to the round baler. The SCV's have been upgraded to the newer gen of couplers. Was not aware of the pto shift pin being a potential problem. Good heads up there... Added incentive to split the tractor for a clutch-pressure plate replacement.
