    9420 Planetary and axle shaft

    looking for torque specs for 9420 axle, putting in some new bearings and seals and having some trouble figuring out the shimming for the axle torque and bearing preload.
    been working on this for a week now and all i can do is make guesses. any help would be awsome, if anyone has access to a shop manual would be really helpful!

    Deere uses what they call "the lead ball method" to adjust axle bearing preload. You order lead balls (R72232). place 2 lead balls on end of the axle before installing planetary. Place them 180* apart. Install the planetary and tighten the center cap screw to 200 ft lbs. Remove the bolt and planetary. The lead balls on the axle should be compressed. Measure them with a micrometer. Take the average thickness of the 2 balls ans make your shim pack that thick. Install the shims and the planetary. Tighten center bolt to 670 ft lbs torque. Then check the rolling torque on the bearings. For 100 mm axles, Rolling torque should be 4-13 ft lbs more than drag measured before preload on bearings(oh yeah, forgot the first step of torqueing to 200 ft lbs without shims or lead balls and then backing off bolt until just loose. Check rolling torque then for "baseline reading" (should be less than 16 ft lbs) For 110 or 120mm axles, increase in torque over "baseline" should be 11-16 ft lbs.
