    4020 pto

Went and got my new to me baler hooked up for the first time the other day, kicked the PTO in and everything seemed to run great, kicked the PTO lever out and it just kept running even with the baler hooked up. It did this last fall with nothing hooked up but it stopped after a while. I took the inspection plate off of the bottom of the bell housing and everything seemed fine. Although the PTO brake shaft? Seemed to have alot of back and forth play with the lever in the off position, I had to pull back as hard as I could on the lever before I couldn't move said shaft. I'm leaning towards a brake issue but I'm not sure at all. Tractor is a 1968 4020 syncro
    183xxx serial number.

You could experiment turning turnbuckle(key 42) a round or 2 to lengthen engagement rod so as to put more pressure on pto brake But I'll bet the pto brake lining is worn out which will require a tractor split to R&R pto brake assembly.

I'm planning on adjusting that when I get home from work today. See how that works.

Well I adjusted the lever to where it had 1 inch of play. Started the tractor, it was still spinning, engaged and disengaged the Lever and it stopped. Cycled the lever again and it stayed spinning. Also this is the last bit of adjustment I had left on the turnbuckle.

Edit. If I hold back as hard as I can on the lever it will stop. Once I let go to the neutral/off it will start spinning.

Everything in the bell housing looked free and clear.
