    JD2140 Hi/low control covers Need help

    I need help to work out how to assemble the hi/low control lever cover on a JD2140 with SG cab. We had to remove the top of the gear box to adjust the transmission pressure as it was low. However in the process the balls on the detent on the pto lever have dislodged. I am having problems assembling it as there are 4 ball bearings, springs, etc that have to be installed all at once. Looks impossible to assemble it as too many things to do at the same time. JD manual no help. Can anyone give me a clue how to do it. Why do they make it so difficulty when will a little more effort they could make it impossible! Hope someone can help.

    Looks like there are "plugs" you remove, put the parts in then reinstall the plugs

    I replied to the same question giving a very similar answer on another discussion forum & they stated his housing was different with only 1 plug instead of 2 plugs. I couldn't locate a different housing in either 2140 parts catalogs. Can you locate adifferent housing with 1 plug?

    JD2140 Hi/low control cover.

    The 2 plugs shown are not opposite each other. One is for the 2 plungers and balls, the other is for the 2 springs and balls. The problem is that to insert the lever you must push the spring from the opposite side through the body into a blind hole. Then you must somehow hold the ball on the end of the spring to insert the lever until the ball drops into the detent hole. Once you have the lever in the correct location you can insert the other ball and spring and the plug. The plunger and ball in the other blind hole will stay there OK I think as there is no spring pushing it out. Hard to explain but there are too many things to do with little space.

    I believe the image posted it for the Independent PTO control.
    I also believe the drawing is wrong, in where the balls, springs and plungers align.
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Number 11(circled in RED) is the lever for the Hi-Low shifter.
    Numbers 4, 8, 9, 10 and lever 17 is for the independent PTO.



    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Numbers 1, 2 and 3 are the detent for the Hi-Low valve(No. 10)

    I think you are right,that the holes for the plugs do not line up. Two set of balls to install. My 2030 only has one ball for the PTO engage lever.
    I can under stand the balls and springs on the left, but why the parts on the right? 9-10-10-9
    Detents for both PTO engaged and not engaged?

    We're not formally educated mechanics around here, but do have years of experience. May not be technically acceptable, but we have used a heavy grease as a "glue" to hold loose parts together in some hydraulic assembly projects.
