    4630 starting question

    77 4630 quad range

    Looking to get it going. Has been setting for 2 years. Anything I should look at before trying to start it? Was once told the rack in the pump can stick on them. I assume to check it on that pump you remover the side plate? Maybe I am just a bit paranoid.

    Thanks in advance for any advice.

    I doubt very seriously that the rack is stuck after two years. Usually the Fuel Control Rack will stick if someone tinkered with it(i.e. installed a delivery valve incorrectly), thus jamming the Fuel Control Rack. This will stick the Fuel Control Rack in the WOT(wide open throttle - max fuel delivery) position. This is the Cranking position. Once the engine starts; and the governor begins to do it's job, the rack is pulled back to the RUN position(desired throttle position).

    The side cover can be removed to check for free-movement of the Fuel Control Rack. Work the rack back and forth by rotating these clamps. When you move one clamp, the others will move also. They will not move very far. If they move freely, the Fuel Control Rack is not stuck.

    But, if you want to play it safe, prior to starting, remove the intake hose at the Turbo inlet housing. Have a section of plywood ready to cover the Turbo inlet, in-case the engine want's to Run-Away.

    Let us know how it goes.

    P.S. I have not experienced a fuel rack sticking from just setting a few years, but I can tell you a story about what one of my Techs did while replacing the Fuel Delivery Valve sealing rings. Long story-shot, lucky for him/us, the Fuel Control Rack un-stuck on it's own. My guess is that the vibration of the engine at high RPMs caused it to let loose and return to Idle position. Come to think of it, it was a 4630 this happened to. The engine pumped so much un-burnt black smoke out of the exhaust, you could not see anything from the waist up in our 100' x 160' service shop, with all the doors opened.

    I've never attempted to start my 4255 with similar type inj pump this way BUT I was told to eliminate full rpm initial startup rpm's one can pull kill cable while attempting to start engine then while engine is turning over push in kill cable and engine will start at idle instead of higher rpm's then slow to idle as it normally starts..

    Nice work horse.

    The 4630 is a dependable tractor. There are still many of these working in our area.

    I'd lower the Turbo Air Cleaner a bit. Keep it from sucking exhaust soot. Just saying.

    I have thought about lowering it. It will probably get a different exhaust too. Or maybe just a new rain cap, It rattles alot.


    Needs more weight up front though!

    My sister bought a 4630 for their farm, I believe it was 1973, the price was $16,900,, brand new.

    The salesman asked how she wanted to pay for it,,, she had JUST received an unlimited limit credit card.
    She charged it,,,

    When she got home, a very nervous bank official was ringing the house phone off the hook.
    He very nervously asked if she had just charged almost $17K on the credit card.
    (Most people were earning $5-6K a year then)
    She said she had,,,

    I do not think she ever did that again,, they usually wrote checks.

    In 1973 I was working at Farmall plant earning 3.95 per hour. Bought a new Chevy Nova SS $2600.00 and had money in my pocket. Got married June 1974 that all changed.
