    Old cell phones

Without boring everyone with details; I recently had to change cell phone carriers. By going with Consumer Cellular I was able to buy an unlocked GSM Smartphone and join the 21st Century with reasonable monthly rates.

But what to do with my old retarded phone that still works perfectly? Instead of recycling it, I wiped it clean, set up some ICE (In Case of Emergency) contacts, got a car charger and threw it in the car. It can still call 911 and take pictures and notes, etc. This way if I forget taking the new phone with me, I still have a backup in case Bad Juju happens while on the road.

That's a great idea. By law all cell phones are required to be functional to dial 911 even if the phone has no active carrier. Locally we donate many of our old phones to a battered women's group who provides them as an "emergency only" phone for their end users. We have even heard of many rural school systems doing the same thing for their teachers in the event of an active shooter incident or similar emergency.
