Any black box computer geeks out there?

My Dell computer which is now going on 8 years, is doing crazy stuff. I cant tell if its starting to fail or not. Its making a lot of noise & I guess thats the Hdrive. More times than not it will click away like a 50 cal. machine gun on top of Pork Chop Hill. While its doing that, I can use the computer but it it will take forever to load a website, bring in the email, etc. I will sit here with that stupid hour glass thingie. Its like it just stalls. Sometimes this will go on for a half hour to hour and a half. Then when the stupid thing finally quiets down, it runs fine. Im also running Nortons 360 & I think it is constantly loading security stuff or causing a problem. Not sure how to turn it off to see if it makes a difference. And then Im not sure on how to get it back on. Its a Dell & its running with no longer supported XP. The most recent repairs to it was over a year ago, where my computer repair shop had to replace several Condensers (I think) off the mother board because would not fire up one day. They showed me the parts they replaced for about $100.

Also, Im on a wireless internet service & it tells me they are at 65 MBPS & signal strenght is excellent.
I think Im due for a new computer after almost 8 years. BUt before I buy one Im trying to determine if I really do have a machine issue & not an internet issue. Is there any way I can tell for sure whats going on other than throwing it into the shop & asking them to check it out. Don't know much about this high tech. junk. Looked inside it one time & could not find any fuel injectors, pumps, oil sumps, air filters, or fan belts. Put the cover back on & said to myself....screw this.

That's a computer issue and not an internet issue. More likely than not, it's the hard drive going out. With the low prices of computers now, you would be better off replacing it than taking it to a shop to diagnose and fix as you would be in it for about as much to have it fixed. And then you would still have an 8 year old PC.

Now is a good time to make sure your important stuff is backed up on a portable hard drive or a thumb drive.
Try defragmenting your hard drive also.

And the obvious, make sure the computer's fan area is clean of dust and debris.

I agree with what has been said already - your hard drive is failing.

Computers are now just like everything else in our society today - throw away. If you had the know-how to replace the hard drive yourself it might be cost effective. But even at that a decent hard drive of a decent size will still be ~$100. You can buy a desktop computer now for $250 with monitor and all which comes with a new operating system that is up to date. Laptops are even cheaper - a decent Acer C720 15.6" laptop has been running at $199 with free shipping from a few vendors for a while now.

And not to confuse the issue, but if all you need are internet access and email, I would suggest a ChromeBook laptop. Around $179 now and there is never any software to worry about - you don't need things like Norton 360. It updates itself automatically in the background so you never have to fiddle with it - just get on-line and go.

I once looked at a PC for a friend. When I opened the case the fan was pushing around dust marbles on top of the cooling fins.

If the drive is truly failing I would not run a defrag. The stress of defragmenting may push it over the edge. Back everything up now!

I work in the IT world and on the side I build, sell and work on computers for people I know. my recommendation to you would be what most of these people say here. Replace it. You are kind of in a bad time period. Laptops were cheaper when kids were going back to school. If you wait can wait a bit I would. for instance when kids were going back to school you could get a nice dell or hp laptop for around $400 with great stats. i3 or possibly i5 with 4 to 6 gig of memory and a 1TB Hard drive.

this is a good site to look for a new one.
