Beware iPhone new "USB Restricted Mode"

I may be the last person on Earth to know this but here goes...

For umpteem years I have been plugging my iPhone into the front of my desktop computer at night to charge. I have to take my dad to the doctor this morning so I had my phone charging last night. I grab it to go this morning and find the battery is around 20% and apparently it didn't charge.

There is a message on the screen saying to "Unlock phone to use accessories". Huh?

So a quick Google search returns that apparently Apple quietly released an update a while back that restricts the use of the Lightning port unless the phone is unlocked. It's called "USB Restricted Mode ". If you plug your phone into the wall to charge it won't really effect you but if you plug it into a computer or other device like I've been doing the restrictive mode can prevent charging. It's funny I never saw this in the "What's new" stuff that scrolled on my screen during recent updates.

Anyway, it is easy to turn off in Settings and return to normal use of USB devices but unfortunately I currently have to hit the road with a 20% battery.

    Thanks Apple. :-(

I noticed that some time back, but only on the normal USB ports on my laptop.
I have one on the back that has the same connectivity as the others, but is powered all the time, as long as the laptop is plugged in.
My Iphone 8 charges fine on it.

BTW, the usb charging output has a lot to do with that mode too. Some standard USB ports dont give enough to charge at a decent rate, and if the phone doesnt detect enough charge, it wont charge. Seems like a bad thing, but keeping batteries healthy is sort of a science, and the wrong charge rates can do more harm than good.
I am not saying thats the issue here, because I have no idea, but I know that this is a problem with some phones.

This setting is difficult to find unless you know where it is. It's found under Settings>FaceID or TouchID & Passcode>USB accessories. Toggle to green if you want access all the time.

I no longer have Iphone but use Android now, but either way I always keep a charging cable in my vehicles so if needed can charge while in the car. If your car does not have USB ports adapters like these are readily available.

I don't do iPhone, but I believe this may be related to some recent articles I've read about the risks of using public charging stations. It has been documented that some of these stations are using data cords instead of power only cords so they can tap in to your phone and steal info.
