    Computer geek

I do provide quite a lot of assistance to my friends ( I do have a couple ) with computer problems /software requests etc.

Recently had a request to install Windows 7 for a guy who'd bought it after doing an online test to make sure his PC was capable.

As everyone knows who buys Windows 7, it comes with 32bit and 64bit DVD.
I advised him of the difference between 32bit and 64bit and he obviously wanted the 64bit OS.
Unfortunately his system is almost ready for the museum and I told him we'd have to install the 32bit OS.

So, when he asked if I install the 32bit OS twice, would that give him a PC with a 64bit OS, I didn't know whether to laugh or cry or

What kind of problems have you come across when helping the PC technically challenged ?

A good friend of mine has an adopted son that is almost 13. They bought him a new laptop about 3 months ago and brought it over to me to set up. I added an anti-virus program and some items he needed for school. Two weeks later I got it back and they said it has a virus. Well, it did (over 1,100 of them and the anti-virus was removed.) The guy had removed the anti-virus so he could go to the porn sites that the software would not let him go. The history was full of some pretty sick sites. This kid does no wrong and I tried very gently to tell the parents what happened, but they cut me off and said our son would never.....

So this time I changed the permissions of the user accounts and made the anti-virus permanent. Three weeks later, I get it back for a virus. I correct it and try to tell the parents as he now has these sites as his favorites. Again, they say it must be one of his friends.

Three weeks later, I get it back and they ask me why I cannot stop this from happening. Again I tried to tell them what their son was doing, but they tell me that no friends are allowed to use the machine and their son would NEVER go to a porn site, so something else must be wrong.

So about once a month, I get this machine that is full of pop ups and porn sites to correct, and my buddy laughs it off that I must be missing something..... Yet he keeps bringing it back......

I used to do tech support for my employer, Government. Most of the stuff is dull, routine nothing really stands out. Thank Gawd I do SIM and Vault work now, just have to deal with accounts, and backend stuff, no users...

Here's a site that you might get a kick out of though, great way to get even with those evil users....

Now bear in mind this is more of a mainframe based environment, but still pretty funny:

Next time they bring it over I'd install a keylogger.
Most laptops now come with an inbuilt webcam so you could actually take a picture of his 'misdemeanors' and await his parents response

Kind of sounds to me,that the parents are hiding their heads in the sand....IOW...they dont want to know, that way they dont have to deal with it. They are just encouraging their son to sneak behind their back IMO.

edit: But....I doubt the son would do it in front of them either

That's about the funniest thing I've read since the old "Clean your mouse's balls" instructions supposedly issued by IBM. When I used to write AutoLISP programs for AutoCAD; the best (read frustrating) software testers were the inexperienced users who would try and do crap the experienced AutoCAD user knew better not to do. So then I have to go back in an add error trapping to account for the dorks.

Brian, I know it's a good friend of yours; but is there even a remote possibility that one or both of the parents are the smut puppies?

I hate to say it, but the child is adopted and I think he gets his way with everything. The user name he gets in with is his name and the parent s have had to ask him to give me his password. I also don't think either parent knows how to get to or do some of the things the kid is doing. :empathy3:
