Time For Some Skid Loader Maintenance

I got some time off for the holidays, and I usually try to catch up on equipment maintenance. The skid loader only has about 270 hours on it, but it sat for several years without running. I figured I better start with a clean palate. I changed the engine oil and filter when I first got it in the summer, but I didn’t have any JD 0w40 at the moment. I think I put Delvac 5w40 in it.
I think I’ll change it out with JD 0w40.
The hydraulic oil is engine oil from the factory, but JD has a product called Hydrau XR, which is supposed to be a replacement for machines that were originally spec’d for engine oil.
I’m doing everything but the oil in the 2 chain cases.

It’s an easy way to spend 400 bucks

I’ll take a couple pictures, I hope to pick up the parts tomorrow and get started.

    Skid steer envy

Finding a used skid steer with low hours is just amazing. I'll confess to some skid steer envy. I can't quite justify one unless it was just a ridiculously low price but I keep looking.

Good job on being proactive and changing stuff out. With it sitting that long, there may have been some condensation in the oil and changing it out is a quick, if expensive fix.

Update...Everything was pretty easy to get at compared to my 4720. Just about everything can be gotten to by removing the side panels, but if you need to do serious surgery, the cab flips up. There are gas filed struts that counter balance the weight of the cab kinda like a hatchback tailgate. One thing about the hydraulics that are different than the 4720 is there is no suction screen to mess with. The spin on filter looks like it is on the pressure side, so it is very easy to change. You only loose a couple ounces of fluid.

You change the hydraulic fluid with the boom down...

Then the fuel filters, air filters, and engine oil with the boom up for better access. There is a boom lock for safety...

i have a old Gehl skid steer....i would suggest doing a chain case oil change soon...oil is probably good but at least on the Gehl the chain case is large and develops condensation that will contaminate the oil.....i think mine only takes ~2 gal of regular oil a side and is simple to change...i always add a quart of lucas oil conditioner to help it stick on the chains ......good time to check chain tension also...(my chains have never required adjusting yet 20yr old machine)

at least on the gehl its the simplest oil to change so dont let it scare you ....not familure with the JD

with the engine oil 0w40w your using i think that machine will probably qualify for extended service intervals 500hrs which should help a little bit on the cost of that expensive synthetic JD oil (will crank easier in cold weather too)
