    What is a hot thread?

I have been wondering about the color coding of the icons on forum posts - sometimes gray, blue and red. Just as I was about to post asking the difference, I noticed the icon legend at the bottom! So now it makes sense.

Except... what makes a thread a "hot thread?" It doesn't seem to have anything to do with the amount of recent thread activity. Is it tagged somehow by the author? Or by site administrators?

After being a member for 2 years, it is time I learned something about how this works!

I think it has something to do with how many replies it has.

Hmmm, I just looked and at first thought you were 100% correct. Then I found a hot thread with 7 replies while some regular threads had 20 or more replies. Maybe if different forums can have have different reply thresholds for a hot thread...

It may factor in, but doesn't seem to be the full explanation.

    It's one that's not cold

I *think* it has to do with age vs views vs replies

Yes, I had been searching in the Help documentation. I just searched the whole site - it seems that it is probably a hot thread if it is replied to
15 times OR viewed 150 times.

Yup. Pretty much. The values are configurable:

Maybe a got thread has more to do with how many reply’s and views in a set period. Like if it gets so many reply’s and views within a few hours or a day it becomes hot and will cool down after not being viewed or replied for hours or days
