    Stopping Photo Inversion during upload

    Good morning!

When I spun my yarn the other day about the building move in Southern Ohio, one of my photos inverted in the upload process. It was upright on the iPhone when taken, upright on the computer when I selected which photos to include with my post, but it was upside down in the completed post, which prompted some good-natured ribbing about us having moved the building to China.

Would one of the site admins please advise if there is a sure-fired way to prevent photos from inverting during the upload process or if there is a way to re-align the uploaded photos? Often times, the photos must be correct side up to help understand the story.

    Thanks!!!,

    Brian

Sorry. There is no "sure fire way" to make sure your pics are correct. It's a bug that's plagued forums for years. I wish they could figure it out and fix the initial root cause. I've been wanting to add a basic photo editing plugin to the forum so members could do very basic editing such as rotating, but one isn't available.

The only fix is to do a manual download of the file off the site, rotate it, re-upload the file.

I use a camera (not a phone) and have never had this problem. So it has to be something with the phone tagging the image with a certain orientation.

Most of the time this problem has been associated with Apple products. This isn't always the case though. I suspect you are correct Stan.

I found, if I take a picture with my phone sideways, and camera on the left facing what I'm taking a picture of it posts on forum right. It I hold my phone vertical it rotates it when posted and I have to rotate 90 degrees to have it right side up. Same with iPad, have camara to the left and posts fine. I think it's a Apple thing also.

I use both a camera and an Iphone, and knock on wood have not had this problem (yet). When I use the Iphone I always have it in horizontal position with home button to the right side.

For all pictures I always copy them to computer first and do any uploading from it.

I think the problem happens if the Iphone is not used in this position, but I could be wrong.

I never understood using a phone in the verticle orientation when taking a pic or video. The videos I've seen taken like that look terrible to me.

I agree. Very hard to watch a video from phone in vertical orientation.

The choice between vertical and horizontal depends on what you are taking a pic of. There is a reason the vertical position is called "portrait" and the horizontal is called "landscape". If you are taking a pic of a person, you will want to use the "portrait" position.

The upload problem is not limited to Apple. I had the same problem recently with an Android phone. I finally had to open the pics on my computer in my photo editing program Paint Shop Pro, then rotate them there. Windows photo viewer would rotate them and save them, but that did not affect the uploaded version.
