    Gator backfires

    I recently took my 2012 550 S4 to a dealer to have some work done on it. I was having trouble getting it to shift. They said I had a clutch problem so they replaced the clutch and a belt. I also had them service it will it was there. When I got my gator back the shifting problem was fixed but it now backfires when it is decelerating. I only had the gator home for an hour and had drive in at most 30 minutes. I immediately called and had them come back and get it. Any thoughts on what may be wrong?

    Hello Kathy and welcome to GTT.

    The replacement of the clutch and the bells belong to the JD program #14MX234. Most of the XUV550 backfiring, my 550 do it also, and normally it's no prob. The carburator is one of the reasons and maybe the gas.

    Usually the fuel mixture will cause it.
    Also putting a free flowing exhaust on an otherwise stock machine will do it every time.
    2014 X540 with HDAP tires, 54" deck, brush guard, arm rests and cargo bag.
    JD 48" plow with angle from seat kit & heavy duty skid shoes.
    4 suitcase weights and chains.
    JD tow behind spreader.
    JD 42" lawn sweeper.
    JD 10P cart.
    JD JS61 RWD walk behind mower.
    Stihl KM110 power head with pole saw, shaft extension, power scythe, curved shaft edger, 2 straight shaft cutters (string & blade).
    Stihl MS180-CBE 16" saw.
    Stihl SH86C hand held blower vac.

    I sort of wonder if the belt is too loose or it's shifting down too fast (sort of free wheeling) causing the backfire.

    The hard shifting was probably because the belt was too tight.

    Sure, the belt isn't causing the backfiring. But the hard shifting was a problem of the first XUV550. In DTAC 95165 january 22 2014, solution # 95165, is said, that the sn are M0550FB+++010001-022437 and M0550FB+++010001-026546(550/550S4).

    The cause for backfiring is, imo, the vanguard engine. Which is cheap and reliable!

    Ok. Thank you. I will try and find a way to get a copy of it. They charged me $800 to change the clutch and belt. I'm sure they knew about the program. If you have any suggestions about how to handle this or how I can get a copy of the program, I would really appreciate your help. The forum has been an awesome help. THANKS!!

    The techs that fixed your machine might not know about the program. I am not positive, but I think they have to search their system for reported issues by serial number. And I could be wrong about this.

    What I would do is copy down your serial number and make a copy of your repair receipt - then pay a visit to your dealer's service manager. Asking nicely usually helps. If they refuse or say they can't find anything, you can request the district service rep to contact you. Might take a little while but if/when he does, this is the person who will be able to find any programs or recalls.

    Hello Kathy, the solution and DTAC numbers are the same in the USA as in Germany. But I don't know, if the program is still going on. In Germany it ended one year ago or so. But the dealers had to inform the 550 owners about the solution program.
    Here the dealers (and the guys in Bruchsal) handle it the way - we forgot you, our mistake. Important are only the serialnumbers. My 550 is younger and so it doesn't belong to the program.

    That doesn't matter, I've no probs with my Gator - one of my best purchases. And real reliable, today we made a little journey with our camper: A hundred miles of big fun
