    2X4 Gator Brakes

    I just purchased this machine. It has seen lots of use down here in a Florida Orange Grove. I have no idea how many hours it has on it. it runs and looks great but the brakes are awful They make all sorts of squawking noises. I've tried to adjust them to no avail. I thought I had them at one point in time but like any good mechanic I tried to make them better and now they suck again. Anyone had any experience with gator brakes?

    I'm wondering if someone has put the wrong type of gear oil in it. By the way how much oil does the gear box hold?

    You should change the oil in the transaxle if you haven't already. It can make a big improvement in reducing brake noise.

    2X4 Gator Brakes

    Thanks for the info and suggestions. Chuck I wish I had the other 400 or so pages for this thing. The brake file was really nice. I purchased the oil this morning. I'm gonna replace that and see how they work afterwards. I suspect I'll end up replacing the brake plates. It would be nice to have the service manual with the brake service procedures. It looks fairly simple but every time I think that, something comes along and bites me.

    The TM1518 IS the service manual for these early gas and diesel turf gators, and in actuality is 692 pages in length. All of that volume's information on the brakes is contained in the excerpt above...

    4X2 Brakes

    Thanks Chuck. I may buy that CD.

    Now I'm in doubts about the amount of Hy-Guard to put back in my transmission. I asked the dealer yesterday how much it held and the guy said one gallon. I put that in it after draining it and it barely shows up on the stick. I'll have to drive nearly 50 miles round trip to buy another gallon. Hopefully that will solve some of my brake problems. The oil I drained looked like the oil I drained out of my diesel car on Monday.

    Oh Well, its a nice day for a drive here in the Florida Pan-Handle.

    My father has a 6x4 that had the same noise issues. Here is what the dealer recommended. There is an additive called PEMO and it helped. JD has a noise reducing hydraulic fluid that is listed for gators with wet brakes. TY27014 on the oil and the pemo is. LVU11673

    Noise Reducing Tractor Hydraulic Fluid (THF)
    The Noise Reducing Tractor Hydraulic Fluid is a service part developed as a solution to handle complaints on brake chatter noise.

    Tractors that may be effected by brake disk chatter: 6430 Premium, 7220, 6330 Premium, 7230, 6230 Premium, 7520, 7530 Premium, 7330 Premium, 7420, 7330, 6220, 7320, 6420, 6320, 7430 Premium, 6230, 6330, 7230R, 7130 Premium, 6430, 7230 Premium, 7130, 6120 / utility tractors / old Gators with wet brakes.

    Solution number: 91208 - Brake Disk Chatter Causing Brake Noise

    Complaint or symptom:
    · Growling or grinding noise heard while making a brake assisted turn to the left or right while turning the tractor.

    · Operator may hear brake chatter while stopping tractor.


    Problem or situation:
    ·
    · The brake disks chatter on final drive axles while applying the brake pedals to stop the tractor.

    · Brake disk on final drive rattles on pinion shaft while applying the brake pedal.

    · The brake disk fits loose on shaft for ease of assembly.

    · This problem may be the result of what is referred to as stick-slip which is the friction disk adhering to the steel plate and then breaking loose. This results in chatter in the brakes and can be noted as noise and vibration during braking. This problem could relate to an issue with the oil, such as water contamination, or it could relate to the mechanical components in the system.

    Solution:
    · It is important to verify the cause of the noise is not due to high water content in the transmission oil. Oil sample would need to be tested.
    · If brake chatter is encountered, run and Oil Scan to determine if water contamination is present. If water is found, warm up the tractor, drain and replace filters, and refill with Noise Reducing THF. Run and Oil Scan to verify water is removed to an acceptable level. If the water content is okay, test the tractor to determine if the brake chatter persists. If brake chatter continues, drain and refill the tractor, retest, or in severe cases, the brake disks may require replacement. If the brake chatter issue is not resolved at this point, the oil will not resolve the problem; look for a mechanical resolution.
    · A new fully formulated fluid, “Noise Reducing THF”, has been developed to reduce brake chatter. In certain conditions this product will replace Hy-Gard oil in our tractors to reduce the brake noise. This fluid is suitable for use wherever JDM J20C is shown as acceptable to use.
    ·
    - Noise Reducing Tractor Hydraulic Fluid, 1 gallon (3.78 L) – TY27014
    - Noise Reducing Tractor Hydraulic Fluid, 5 gallons (18.9 L) – TY27015
    - Noise Reducing Tractor Hydraulic Fluid, 55 gallons (208 L) – TY27016

    Note: Dealers can order this fluid on Dealer Daily stock orders or Machine Down orders.

    IMPORTANT: Do not add other additives to fluid.
    Additional information:
    · Brake disk may need to be changed if the oil is contaminated with moisture.
    · Drain oil from the complete system (brakes, MFWD when engine is running, and oil cooler).
    · Change transmission and hydraulic filters.
    · Fill with 20-25 liters of Hy-Gard oil. Start engine and activate MFWD and brakes.
    · Put a jumper hose in SCV and activate SCV to flush the system (10-15 minutes).
    · Drain oil again as described in the second step.
    · Change transmission and hydraulic filters again.
    · Fill with the correct amount of the new J20C Noise Reducing THF fluid with enhanced brake noise reduction to the system (transmission and hydraulic).
    · Change brake disks.

    Note: If the brake chatter issue continues, the oil isn’t the solution, look for a mechanical explanation.

    I've got a 6x4 Gator with brake noises exactly as described in that solution but the part numbers listed are no longer made. Has anyone successfully gotten rid of their brake noises?
