What thread sealant should you use for hydraulic fittings?

Kenny, you posted that you used 3M™ Scotch-Weld™ Low Viscosity Air/Hydraulic Sealant HP69 Purple found here **3M™ Scotch-Weld™ Low Viscosity Air/Hydraulic Sealant HP69 Purple, 50 mL, 10 per case

Do you know what is the difference between the HP69 and the HP45 is found here **3M Tape and 3M Adhesives

Thanks for the help and insight.

No Rob, I don't know the difference. I just asked my hydraulics supplier what they used for assembly's and that's what he sold me.

Before I started using that, I used Permatex #80632 or even Loctite #565.

As a side question, does anyone know why these liquid thread sealers typically have a short shelf life? The bottle of Gasoila soft-set that I bought last year for my diesel pump says 1 year, and I noticed the 3M HP69 says the same thing (12 months). Do they become unsafe to use after a year? Or does the paste just become more viscous and harder to apply?

Most of these are "Anaerobic", meaning they cure in the absence of air, they actuality "slow cure" in the bottle over extended periods of time, and/or the ingredients evaporate over (yes even through the sealed plastic bottles) time so the formula changes. It would not use them much past the expiration dates...I don't believe they create the dates just to sell more product.
