    MMM anti-scalp wheel question...

Haven't tried mowing yet with my 1023E, we still have snow on the ground. But when I compare the mower on my X320 to the one on the 1023E, the X320 has an anti-scalp wheel about 6" wide on the front of the mower, but not on the 1023E. Given that the 1023E mower is 6" wider, won't it be more likely to scalp without that wheel in the front? Just wondering. I had originally planned to sell the X320, but think I will wait to see how well the 1023E does on my lawn. May end up using the 1023E just for my several miles of trails. We'll see.

    Vtail,

I am not familiar with the MMM on the SCUT units -- but found that my x304 deck still had the possibility of scalping on my rather uneven grassy areas of the last property we owned, so I added rear anti-scalp wheels to the deck where there were none in the factory configuration. This is no small effort as there is not much clearance to the rear wheel steering movements on the discharge side. Here is what I did:

The wheels, height adjustment brackets and sleeves are those used on the Rear Engined Rider mowers that Deere made for the SX and RX series and others... Here are the separate parts:

For some reason the replacement brackets that hold the axles are much longer below the axle than the original ones on the RER single blade deck, and they tended to dig into the turf -- so I shortened them to match after this photo was taken.

You may notice that the mounting hardware on the added anti-scalp wheels is a bit unusual -- it is aircraft 1/4-28 rivet head stuff that is both held from rotation and tightened from the same side of the work. Here is a detailed look...can't have bolt heads interfering with the mower blades inside the deck housing.

All of the above is a long way of saying that you can add anti-scalp wheels and rollers to any deck if you have a mind to... If you determine that your MMM on your 1023E needs more stabilizing for your terrain -- you just need to "improve" it as you see fit.

Being a drive over deck it must sit flat on the floor. If it were to have a mid fixed roller the deck would not sit flat.

If a drive over mmm had the roller it would try to roll away from the tractor when you try to drive over it.

As long as the mower is setup properly, scalping will be kept to a minimum. Also the way you mow can have a drastic effect on scalping.
