    Thumb on bucket for 2038r

Iíve been doing some brush/tree work now that itís a nice temperature for working outside. Iíd like a grapple but Iím not ready to pay that much. $2500 min it seems for one and a diverter. Then I saw this thumb The Thumb. It seems like quite a deal. Iíd still need a diverter, but that would bring it down to the $1500 range and so easier to stomach. I also like that Iíd basically always have the thumb attached instead of having to swap between the bucket and a grapple. However I am concerned with the amount of force this will put on the top of the bucket. I could get the thick plate on the top of the thumb extended at my familyís metal shop and maybe add a second one inside the bucket for strength. What do yíall think of doing this? I have the standard 53Ē? materials bucket on the 220r loader on my 2038r. I do have a set of Arterian forks so that does provide the base for their grapple but itís still like $1500 for the grapple conversion and Iíd want a few upgrades like the stuff to prevent things from poking through the back plate. Then a $800+ diverter.

Why I personally do not like these:

-You will have to significantly reinforce the top of the bucket, and to do that properly will involve welding and added weight.
-You cannot see through the bucket to see what your grabbing.
-The sides of the bucket can get in the way of carrying wider loads.

But, they are certainly helpful, and many people are very happy with them and find ways around their limitations.

Also I think you total estimate on a real grapple is about $500 to high, if that makes a difference.

Seems like $2500 is spot on. Sure I could cut about $300 in the fangs/debris guard but the debris guard seems like something youíd really want.

I just purchased the CTA grapple. $1350 + Shipping, depending on where you are at may be around $137. Call Jeff he will let you know. I am very pleased with mine. I just installed it yesterday and played with it for about an hour. I plan on doing a review on it later, after I use it a bit more. Not that the Artillian was out of the picture, it just did not fit what I wanted to do, as I do have the Artillian frame and forks.

I like my CTA grapple and I am thinking on getting the 55" for my 2038r when it comes in. I am very satisfied with the CTA products.

Since you are shopping Artillian their diverter is only a bit over $600 not $800 as you stated. That and the fangs and side guards, while nice, can be added later and save $500 at the start.
