Frontier SB1164 Snowblower - Impeller Bolt Issues

    Hello Everyone...

My Frontier SB1164 Snowblower is causing me some grief. I have had the same issue twice now, late last winter and again just last night. The bolt the screws into the impeller has broken off. This is the bolt that goes through the center of the impeller and screws into a spline that comes off the gear box on the blower. The screw does not "back-off" and fall out it breaks off inside the spline and I have to get a local mechanic to use a screw extractor to get the broken bolt out and then replace it. The last time required quite a bit of disassembly (remove gear box and the attached drive arms, etc.) and it was not a quick fix. This is the 5th winter for this blower (purchased new from local JD dealer) and I only started having this issue starting late last winter.

    I have two quick questions....

    (1) Is this a common thing to have happen on an SB1164?

    (2) Is there a way to get the impeller out without having to disassemble everything behind it?

    Thanks in advance.

That is an odd one. Here is the details on the bolt.

    Part Number: 5RD0100040
    Part Price: 0.34 USD
On Hand: 0 (Supplier Direct - Contact your dealer for availability) Check Other Stores
    Description: Bolt - HEX. BOLT 3/8 IN. X 1 1/2 IN. NC G

That's a lot of heartache for a $0.34 bolt. JD Parts doesn't provide the same level of technical detail on bolts for Frontier equipment that it does for other equipment.

All of the impeller rotational force is applied to the key and keyway. The bolt just holds it in place. Did you verify to ensure the bolt is not bottoming out? Is it possible the bolt is being over tightened? What grade is the bolt?

Sorry if these are dumb questions but we hand to start somewhere. :-)

Sorry, I am not a real "mr. fixit" kind of person. All items would have seemed to fit fine and would have been hand tightened with a normal wrench. The snowblower worked fine for about 2 or 3 years and now it does this once a year. Very strange indeed..?

Well... An update from the weekend. My local mechanic got a look at it and things (fortunately) were not as bad as they seemed. After melting out the ice and snow we found that the bolt had indeed "backed-out" and not broke-off up inside the impeller spline. So we simply had to replace the bolt and washers (keyway was intact) and get up and running again. He replaced the factory bolt (which was a Grade 5) with a Grade 8 bolt and put some Loctite on the threads to reduce the chance of it backing-out again. Much, much better than a "tear-down" and screw-extractor nightmare. Not to mention, a whole lot LOT cheaper.

Thank you for the follow-up. The Grade-8 bolt and Locktite should resolve the issue.

This was only my 2nd winter with my SB1164 but I'm going to go out ad check that bolt on mine this afternoon. I had never given it much thought but I guess it's something to keep an eye on and easy enough to check whenever I grease the fittings and chain.

A little off topic, but does that SB1164 mount on to the Deere front Quick Hitch and mate with a Deere front PTO shaft or is it something different?

I don't know if it was you, but someone else posted photos of theirs and stated it was the same or slightly less than the Deere 47 snow blower. Just by looking at the photos, the SB1164 appears to be a heavier duty unit and the steel second stage impeller with the gusset reinforcements caught my attention immediately. If they mount up to a Deere Quick Hitch, if I had to do it over again and possibly knowing what I know now, I would have opted for the Frontier blower. I would want the Deere Quick Hitch to maintain compatibility with other implements.
