    Leaf vacs?

Need to find equipment to help me deal with a lot of leaves on our property. Considering purchase of a used PTO trac-vac unit for my 1026R. Anyone have experience with this type of unit or other makes of leaf vacs ?

I used to use an old trac vac in a 1975 wheel horse. The blower was powered by a 5 HP Brigs and blew the leaves into a JD 80 cart. It worked quite well. We ran the blower at 1/2 throttle cause it was only a 42 inch deck. I think mowing 2.5 acres of wooded lawn I'd have to empty it about 6-7 times. It sure beat raking them I know that.
Somewhere around here I might have a pick of it. I'll see if j can find it.

    G, welcome to GTT!

I have a TracVac 854 on my 4110 they are VERY hard to find used! My biggest complaints are the hookup, and that it packs the trailer so tightly that unloading it is a super PITA. Limited on time now, I can get more detailed later if needed.

Ken - thanks for the information and the great photos - am considering a unit just like this, that is in very good condition. Like the idea of not having to maintain another motor that is used a few times a year. Interested in the comment about being hard to find - if they are a good idea and work well - wouldn't there be more around? Since I have independent lift, should not have the same problem with 3 pt that I saw that you had in the photos.

I think I saw somewhere that the 854 units go for ~$2500 new?

Yeah, $2500+ new. I found mine for $1000 used two states away. They are rare because of the price, the gas engine powered ones are about $1000 less new and even cheaper used. Why are they so much? I guess because they sell a lot less of them, and the gearbox is expensive (it must take 540 rpm in and make it about 3600 rpm out)

Yoa are correct that since you have the IL kit it would be easier to hook up.

In anticipaton of needing to handle leaves soon - pulled the trigger and bought a used Trac-Vac 854. (Will need to post pictures later.) Trailer is in very good shape, but a fair amount of surface rust on the vacuum blower, but all is very functional. In hooking it up, found that the PTO was 4"+ short, someone had cut it quite short for some very close setup. Looked at TSC for an extender, put didn't see a good option, so spent a little more and bought a new PTO half shaft. Measured it up and cut it to length and it works good, and is safe....as a PTO can be. The airflow with the 8" hoses and full 540RPM speed should work well!

Still have to work through an issue with the chute (boot?) attachment to my 60D deck. The chute that came with it is not a fit. Is stamped on it "539". Found a website that had some Trac-Vac info - with a very long list of chute codes - looks like I need a "598". Guess I need to find out how to get the right one now. Anyone have any experience in dealing with Trac-Vac?

Nice, sounds like you have a good start. I have not needed to call then as I was able to make my boot fit. Do yourself a favor and change the gearbox oil and check the belt carefully.

Talked to Trac-Vac, and the area distributor - both very helpful. Have a new chute on order from a local dealer. A bit pricey, so have expectations of a great fit!
