I wasn't sure where to post this. How long and under what conditions can I store a V-belt? I'm sure they sit in a warehouse sometimes for years, but can I just leave one in my unheated garage for a few years and not worry about it dry-rotting or anything? I ask because I finally got my old Model 30 tiller hooked up to my 110 garden tractor. I am using the belt that came with it, and to me, the belt looks pretty worn, but it appears to be working fine. I want to order a new belt, but being cheap, I mean frugal, I'm not going to replace the old one until it stops working. For all I know the old belt may work for another five years, I really have no idea. What I DO know, is that the belt will fail when I'm going to need to use the tiller, and then I'll have to wait a week or two for a new belt unless I have one here and ready.
Would it be better to store the belt in my basement, which is only slightly more temperature controlled than my garage?
