    New Member questions, alternator installation.........

My 720 gas. Having never been able to diagnose the generator/regulator problem, I gave up. I have junked a great many early Pontiacs, several with internal regulators in their alternators. Had 6 tested, one failed. I made up a bracket using the original one as a pattern, used the original adjusting strap & belt. Looks like factory!!! When I went to hook up the battery wire, I got what looked like striking a welding arc. Dawned on me I had to change the battery over to negative ground. The existing battery cable was too short for the battery I had just bought.. It has a couple taped places in it too. Installed a small diameter welding lead that is 2ft longer. The battery end is an auto parts universal in a larger size to accommodate the larger than automotive cable.

Now.........I have also assumed that I must switch the coil terminals.........???? And the amp meter connections......??? Am I missing anything???

I'm unaware of what all you would need to do for that conversion. Honestly I had no idea those tractors were a positive ground. But Agri-Services can tell you everything you need to know. I plan on getting a new wiring harness for my 60 from these guys. They have several different options and can custom tailor a new harness for a very reasonable price. They have everything listed on their site to include prices.

heckinohio, once again, no pics of the 720? man!

anyway, what was the original problem with the generator, those things are usually simple enough its hard to think that it wouldnt work.

after the coil wire, i cant think of much else, (i need to look at the wiring diagram again) - other than changing out the amp meter for a volt meter, leaving the amp meter in series will probably be a little hard it, at least once lol

dang, fingers got ahead of again....Jason, ag-services does do a real nice job with the new wiring harnesses, they look original, with that wound insulation and about the cheapest thing to do on a restoration HAHA

Every 2 cylinder was positive ground. for some reason they thought that electrons flowing the other way was safer, or something like that haha - the new generation tractors are where the switch to negative ground comes in. If you chose to go with an electronic ignition, you will have to buy it based on your ground, positive or negative.
