    Flywheel Removal

    I have an oil leak behind the flywheel and I am trying to take it off.

    As you can see, I got the bolts and locking nuts off but when I try to pull off the wheel it hits something and wont come off. I think the shaft is tapered at the end to keep the flywheel from coming off.

    Any suggestions?

    Gently tap some wedges in the two gaps on either side. This will open the flywheel up just enough to allow it to slide off. If you get carried away with the wedges, it's possible to crack the flywheel.

    X3 keep fixing yours up so I know what to do to mine.

    The flywheel looks heavy. What is your plan to keep it from falling?

    I would agree with Dieselshadow. It looks like it is nicely oiled but you may want to try to soak it with a good penetrating oil like Kroil to loosen it up. Also what were you using to pull with?

    I just used a lot of WD40 and pulled it off with my hands. after tapping it with a hammer It has to be about 80-90lbs.

    Unfortunately, the gasket that I replaced was not the source of the oil leak. What other possibilities could there be behind the flywheel.

    Im thinking about going with a thicker oil and hopefully that will fix it. I don't really want to take off the flywheel again. Although, it should be easier next time.

    How much thrust play does the crank have? (move the crank from the flywheel to clutch) Thrust is adjusted by the flywheel position and has an effect on clutch operation. There's also an oil slinger and bearing just behind the flywheel. What kind of condition are they in? Does the crank have any radial play? Is the engine vacuum pump (located on the engine end of the fan shaft) in good condition and working? What is the oil level? Too high can cause the oil to spew out of the bearing.

    Do you have the service manual? My 60 is very similar, but may have some differences. Enough that some of what I just said may not exactly apply to an early A. I think it does on later A's.

    That's a lot of questions. I guess the first thing would be best is to see where exactly the oil is coming from and then I can tell you more.
