    JD 530 shut off

Hello, I just received my “new” 1959 John Deere 530. I have been told that prior to shutting off the tractor, I should let the tractor run at fast idle for a couple minutes, around 1450 rpms or so, then turn the tractor off while running at fast idle. Any insight would be great.

I don't remember ever hearing to operate a 2 cyl engine at 1450 rpm's then shut off at fast idle. I'll call that statement incorrect. I grew up on a farm with a JD 530 & was employed at a JD dealership from '66-'87 serving as service manager for the last 13 yrs.

i have a jd model 50--and i never done that. bring it to a low idle for a bit, before shutting it off. every piece of equipment i've ever ran or owned never got sut off at a high idle.

IMO-that's as bad as turning the pto on a high idle

Thanks guys, I never heard of that before myself but I never owned a 2 cylinder tractor. I will let her run at slow idle for a minute or two to cool down. Then I’ll turn her off.

If one of you guys would tell me how to post pictures I would post my 5420, 530 and (don’t throw rocks) my Farmall H.

Also, is it okay to post replies like this or should I reply by private message???

Thanks guys and headed to Labor Day event here in central Ohio this weekend. Vintage tractor pulls held on Sunday. 🤠

I agree with the others, let it slow idle until the temp is 180 degrees or less if it has been working hard and temp rose higher than that. That advise was for the older models that had no water pump or thermostat. I would do the same on a 530, but I must also say I've never owned one so I could be wrong.

As far as shutting it down at a fast idle "about 1450 RPM or so", I'm thinking a 530 does not even run that fast. Could be wrong about that too!
Think of all the raw fuel that will be sucked into the cylinders as it winds down from high RPM and no spark, and polluting the crankcase oil.
