    JD Mt Steering

    Hello to all. New to the forum.
    I was referred here in a effort to find a after
    market power steering for a JD MT.
    I was told that they had been installed on
    these tractors in years past.
    If anyone knows where I can find these
    parts I would sure appreciate it.

    Hello and welcome! I haven't heard of power steering for any of the M series tractors... But that doesn't mean they don't exist! I wonder how similar the steering on your MT is to a 420T or 430T; perhaps even a 440. Those seem like they might be more likely to have power steering kits available. You might also want to look into some of the industrial models as well.

    I'm curious to know why you are interested in power steering? My M steers wonderfully even at very low speeds and a tricycle front end should turn even easier.

    My shoulders are tired and I do alot of turning mowing
    our pasture.
    Mostly thought it would be a fun project!

    This tractor is my Grandpa's. He purchased it new in about
    1952. I remember as a young kid, helping dad farm hearing
    the MT putting along the hills, knowing Grandpa was headed
    back to see what we were doing.
    After Dad took over the farming he used it to run a unloading
    auger for shelled corn. My mother would haul corn in, and would
    unload the wagons with the MT running the auger.
    Later when Dad retired my brother and I decided we should keep the
    tractor in the family. Because of some confusion, the tractor got sold.
    I called the guy and told him I would like to purchase my Grandpa's
    tractor. He said he needed it but would take my name and number
    and would call me if he decided to sell it.
    About 5 years later he called. I purchased it and it looked exactly the
    same as when Dad had it.
    I use it to make my grandchildren happy, mow 3 acres of pasture
    and hope to take it on tractor drives some day soon.
    That's the story of my Grandpa's tractor!
    Thanks for the info on where I might find the power steering units.
    I will keep looking!!

    A good story makes it all the more special. I wish I knew more about my M's past.

    Is the steering box full of oil (or grease)? The steering box is often one of the neglected routine maintenance points just because it is such a pain to get to. It won't really be a substitute for power steering, but if you are trying to turn dry gears then you are working harder than you need to.

    Something like this IHS555 - TORQUE GENERATOR will fit the diameter of the steering shaft, but I'm not sure where you could put it because the steering shaft, throttle, and hydraulic lines all occupy the ridge at the top of the hood. Maybe if you re-routed the hydraulic lines there would be enough room. The good news is that because of the live hydraulics on an MT, you wouldn't need a separate pump.

    It might be easier to just start your day off by eating a bowl of wheaties before you climb up onto the tractor.

    Another thing you can try is to change your mowing technique. Rather than spiraling into the center of the pasture, I like to cut my fence line and then go down the middle to start a "walking circle" path just like how a zamboni resurfaces an ice rink. Minimal turning and clutching means I cut more grass in less time with less effort for the tractor (and me).

    Thanks for the reply Evergreen. I check the steering
    grease every spring.
    I'm cheerios guy. LOL
    I change mowing patterns all the time, but still
    lots of turning.
    I have a torque generator which is half of the battle.
    Just would like to get some brackets and see
    how they done the hydraulics.

    Have you checked the front axle to make sure there is no "old grease" issues?

    Jack both front tires off the ground, grab a tire, and try to change the steering angle,,
    it should be REAL easy,,,

    With no added weight on the front,,, the tractor should steer easy.
