    John deere L or La

My dad and have been working on what we think is a 1946 L but its not for sure since the serial tag is gone as with the majority of those tractors, but it came with a pto from the factory and I was told the L never came with a pto only LA's, how to I tell the two tractors apart? Our tractor is a hollow tube frame and has 22" wheels.... any ideas?

Great to hear of another L / LA being restored. I have a 1941 LA and there are several photos of it here: http://www.greentractortalk.com/foru...ohn-deere.html

To my understanding, the hollow tube is always a L. My LA has a solid tube. I'll see what I can find out about the PTO, never heard / don't remember that fact about the L / LA series. I know the LI, which was the industrial variant of the L, had a PTO and were usually painted yellow.

Another distinguishing trait between the L and LA was the L had slotted rims where as the LA's rims are solid.

One more: LA tires were 24" from the factory.

    Looking forward to the pictures.

And are they actually solid frames or do the LAs have caps welded on the ends

Only the belt drive. I would like to have a breaking plow just for show. Probably will buy a wagon to pull the grandkids around in.

The LA has solid frames and weigh about 700 lbs more than the L. The LA weighs in around 2200 lbs. and if I remember correctly the L is around 1500 lbs.

I forgot to check on the PTO for that series. I have a really bad case of CRS, worse sometimes than others.
