    Converting 24 volt starter on 720D to 12 volt starter

    Has anyone changed a 24 volt starter on a 720 or 730 diesel to a 12 volt starter, or replaced the pony motor with a 12 volt starter? If so, what brand of starter did you use and was it powerful enough to turn over the diesel fast enough to start it in 50F temperatures? What type of battery did you use?

    Can't answer your question but have one of my own. I had a 720D with pony motor for 20 years and never had an issue starting it. On the other hand, much newer diesels with elect start we continual attention to battery condition, wiring, cable connections, starter repair etc. I am sure pony motors have their challenges too, but never had trouble starting the 720.

    If I recall, the 730 diesel was available with electric start from the factory. Also, the only major difference between a 720 and 730 should be the tin. If I am correct in this, then the electric starting system components from a 730 will fit your 720.

    I do know for certain that back in the day there was at least one company selling pony to electric conversion kits because grandpa had one on his 70 diesel. However, I must also point out that the tractor is currently started with the pony because (at least according to my grandfather) the pony is more reliable. The electric starter and all of its brackets are sitting in a box in his basement gathering dust.
    '50 Model M w/electronic ignition, 12v conversion, and a 3pt conversion plus a homemade snowplow, a Deere Model 51 trailer plow, a Woods RM59 finish mower, a Bark Buster splitter, and a few other toys.
    '69 Sears Suburban 14 48" deck and 42" back blade, an estate rake, and a sweeper.
    '07 F250 XL Powerstroke, crew cab, short box, 4x4.
    '85 F150... I finally sold my very first truck after racking up over half-a-million miles on the original drivetrain.

    Grandpa is a bit of a pack-rat... Especially with his spare parts. I doubt he would sell it. The biggest downside to the pony starter is that any repairs are really expensive because parts for them are getting harder to find. I think he keeps the electric starter around in case the pony dies again and can't afford to fix it.

    Both 720 & 730 had the option of 4 cyl engine or 24 volt electric starter for starting 2 cylinder diesel engine.

    If you take your 24V starter to an alternator/starter repair shop they can rewind it to 12V.
    F932-gas with 72" mower deck(sold)
    2720-72" mower deck with hydraulic lift, 3 valve rear SCV, loader, bucket, forks, 84" RFM, blade, 74" snow blower, box blade, land grader........
