    Ken's bolt-on hooks - how to paint?

I've just placed an order for 3 hooks/clevis. I think they'll be a great addition to the bucket.

Any advices on how to paint them?
I guess I may find JD green from the dealer?

    Thanks

I believe they're cadmium plated now so there's really no need to paint them. Even if you do they'll get scratched up when you start using them.

Just got my answer on the website:
All Bolt On Hooks and Clevis Mounts are now Zinc Chromate plated, just like the Grade #8 hardware supplied, and most of the hardware used on your machine. This new process lets you install them without the need to paint them if you choose, the pleasing gold color will match any machine!
They are not available for the moment but I contacted Ken and he will ship my order as soon as they are back in stock. That is good service!

I used MEK rinse and then JD rattle can yellow. Paint sticks well and it does soon develop that chipped and well used look we all like to see. Not sure I'd like that naked cadmium plated gaudy look...

I originally bought JD yellow to paint mine thinking it would be a nice contrast to the JD Green on the bucket. After mounting them I didn't end up painting them. I think they actually look pretty good the way they are and I figured the paint may not last as chains are hooked and unhooked. Every now and then I look at the can of JD Yellow I bought and think maybe I'll paint them and then don't.

BTW. If Ken doesn't have a problem with this. I have two of Ken's Bolt On Grab Hooks with hardware and backing plates that I have not used yet. If someone is in a hurry and needs them sooner than Kenny gets new ones back in stock, I wouldn't mind sending them to whomever needs them. Just send the new ones you get from Ken back to me when he gets them back in stock and sends them to you. I was going to use them for my forks or maybe the ballast box, but haven't gotten around to it yet and probably won't until the spring.

Sorry for the delay in responding, I was offline most of last night doing hubby things with the wifey...every now and than you just gotta do what you have to do

-Yes, I am still out of stock on the hooks, I confirmed yesterday that they will be here the middle/end of next week, so the date of 1/9/15 I have posted on the website is still accurate.
-DMercier is in Canada so I have to send him an invoice for payment, he was just getting the processes started early.

-Most customers are NOT painting the hooks/clevis mounts now due to the Zinc Chromate plating. They find (as do I) that the color/finish matches the other hardware on the tractor and look more "factory" than painting them, plus it helps eliminate the scratching/chipping problem, especially if they are used heavily with chains. They also appreciate the "ready to use" aspect of the plated parts, rather than having to buy paint, and wait for multiple coat's to dry thoroughly-especially this time of year when its so cold in most parts of the country.

-In the limited experiments I've done, I found that scuffing with medium grit sandpaper, then wiping with a solvent like lacquer thinner/MEK, and finally priming with Krylon brand primer seemed to work well. This is not an endorsement of a process or product-just something I tried with materials I had on hand already at the request of a few customers when we first started shipping the plated hooks.

I roughed mine up, cleaned with thinner and let completely dry, then sprayed them with primer, and then painted them with the JD green aerosol I got from my dealer. This was about two years ago and the paint has not come off the hooks yet, and they are well used. I have the HD bucket that has a gap between the top and bottom plates. I cut some metal shims to insert so when I torqued down the hooks the top plate wouldn't compress and distort. Everything is sealed with GE clear Silicon for waterproofing.
