    New 4066R hydraulic slapping noise

I just traded in my 3039R for a 4066R with 3rd, 4th,5th scvs. Love the extra power and abilities, but have one issue. When engaging the 3rd scv to power the grapple from the thumb switch there is a loud metallic slapping sound coming from the solenoid in the back just below the 4/5th scv. It sounds like slapping a large wrench against the roll bar. Very loud too (varies with RPM), wife can hear it in the house 70ft from the barn with engine at 1500 rpm.

I know that is not the solenoid for the 3rd scv as that one is underneath. I also know it is not accidentally being triggered as the same happens even when that one (dealer says it is for the continuous oil) is unplugged.

Seems like somehow the general pressure in the system is causing it. It happens most when half cycling (closing or opening the grapple part way).

Dealer is unsure if it is normal, seems way too loud to me to be. I've had 3rd scv on the 3039R and a 4310 and neither made a noise even close to this, but this does have that continuous function that they did not.

Would appreciate experiences of any of you with a similar setup. Could it somehow be plumed wrong or that is just its nature?

    Thanks!

I have a 4052R with 3rd, 4th, and 5th SCVs. OOS. I can hear the solenoids operate, but there is nothing loud or metallic about it. Maybe you could post a video?

Granted this is a bit excessive with rapid presses. It makes that noise anytime that the grapple is not fully opened or closed with an extra couple of seconds of pressure after. If I do that -there is no extra noise - anything else makes the slapping sound. Normal grapple use mostly is making that sound unless I make a concerted effort to stay on the pressure longer than my previous machine.

Just got an email from dealership - service manager says that is normal since fluid is always going thru that rear scv setup for the continuous flow control.

    Thanks for your input.

I hear many normal sounds, but some that are really loud and as you described as well. The one right at the 1:00 minute mark for example is nothing I've ever heard, if that's not your grapple closing or hitting something, that does seem too angry. I have never pulsed the button like that, next chance I get I will and see if I can duplicate your clank.

    Hi,

Just a guess: maybe a hydraulic line or hose is moving from pressure changes. And maybe it hits a metal part giving such noise.

Yes the one at the minute mark is the grapple itself clanging hitting closed.

If that's the case, yours sounds just like mine under "normal" operation.

    Thanks Broesel,
but that is not it. The sound is definitely coming from the solenoid/4th/5th scv on the right rear. 3 sets of ears have verified. All the lines are the factory hard lines and there is no movement there.

It almost seems like that back pressure surge one gets when using a plunger. Like it is causing something to move within that 4/5 scv/solenoid setup and clanking something inside on the pressure change.... but I don't know anything about how these components are built and just guessing.

ok, please try to use the 4th/5th SCV - maybe there is air inside, that expands/compresses when pressure changes. Could easily be removed by using them with something attached to flush air out.
