If the system is low there's no need to drain and refill.

You can add refrigerant as a gas on the low side while observing your pressure gauges with the engine at 1500-1800 RPM. Add refrigerant until the high side is where it belongs. Turn low side vale off and monitor pressures. When the pressures are in the ballpark your discharge / vent temperature should be acceptable

    Here's a temperature-pressure relationship chart for reference.

In that case after you replace the condenser you should also attach a vacuum pump and pull into a deep vacuum, ~29" - 30" to do the following:

    • Remove any moisture in the system (where there's air there's moisture). Pull vacuum for 30-45 minutes depending upon humidity.
    • Leak check the system by pulling a vacuum. Shut the pump down for 10-15 minutes to determine there's no vacuum loss.
    • The vacuum will pull most of the refrigerant into the system without the need to run the engine.

Finally the AC system back working. Took exactly 2lb 12 oz of juice. $870 cdn later, 800 for condenser and grill, 70 for the tech to do his magic.
