42" Accel Deep Deck With Mulch attachment

    Hi,

I have this deck and was doing maintenance on it yesterday using the manual. Page 42 and 43 show pictures and under the 42" it stated that there were 3 areas to grease. 2 spindles marked A That I did fined and greased. Then an Idler arm pivot grease fitting marked B that I couldn't find. Can anyone help me the picture is on page 42.

Where go you all go for parts? I have an X354 and need a few parts?

    Thanks in advance,
    Steve

According to the photo in the manual the grease fitting is down below the idler.

Here is the parts illustration for that deck and you can see the grease fitting as item #6.

    I hope this helps.

A good source of parts on-line is www.greenfarmparts.com. They are a site sponsor and using the GTT code will get you a discount.

    Thanks,
Yes I saw that exact picture but can't find the fitting. I called JD service and they told me there was only 2 fittings on the 42" deck but the manual is telling me 3 fittings. Just looking for confirmation from you experts. Wondering if the manual is incorrect. They told me 3 on the 48" only. Both show on the page.

I would say that if you can positively identify the bushing (part #20) and can confirm that it does not have a grease fitting or a hole drilled in it for a grease fitting then chances are the manual is incorrect and it does not require lubrication.

You might also be able to tell from close inspection if it looks like something that "should" be greased. If it is simply a metal bushing rotating on a shaft then perhaps it would still benefit from a shot of fluid film or something.

The 48" deck on my X500 had a similar point of confusion in that the manual stated there was a cap on the tensioner that needed to be removed and sprayed with lubricant. Mine of course had no such cap. Fortunately using the JD parts list I was able to figure out that there was a serial number break on the decks and that after a certain serial number the tensioner was redesigned and there was no longer a removable cap or the need to lubricate anything. It sure would have been nice had the manual been updated to reflect the two tensioner designed.

So I took a look again tonight and also took some pics.
I couldn't find anything but are we talking around this black pulley attached?

Thank you for the photo, that was extremely helpful. JD shows parts for two different 42-inch decks. One 42-inch domestic and one 42-inch mulch domestic. I thought you said yours was the mulch deck. However, below is the parts layout for the 42-inch deck without the mulch designation. As you can see, the layout of the idler pulleys matches your photo exactly and it does not have any grease fitting on the idler.

    Thanks,
My deck has a mulch option. I paid approx. 100.00 for a mulch option where I have to change out the bottom opening plate and grass catcher hanger and slide a handle to mulch. So I guess I don't have a 100% mulching deck and have it either way all I need to do is change 3 bolts and a plate. Sorry I never knew there was 2 decks. I just thought the mulch deck had the kit. I do have the 7 bushel bagger with my x354.
So am I correct in saying there are only 2 grease fittings (1 on each spindle) and that's it for the deck?

Thanks for the info and your time
    Steve

It is very confusing. There is a 42A deck which can have a mulch kit added (this is what you have). And then there is a 42M deck which is called a mulch deck and it has some kind of little extra wings on the bottom. Your manual has a section showing where these wings can be removed and stored on top of the deck.

So am I correct in saying there are only 2 grease fittings (1 on each spindle) and that's it for the deck?
Correct. Below is the 42A photo from the manual. I will retract my previous statement about the manual being incorrect. It looks like it does in fact show info for both the 42A and 42M decks.

Thanks, very confusing. I don't have the wings so the deck is a 42A. That means I am done greasing this bad boy. Thanks everyone.
