S82: 'steering sector plate' separated from 'pinion'

    Here's the deal:

Just bought an old S82 - runs fine.

After 2-2 'rough' rides around the property (we have fairly bumpy terrain), I noticed an abrupt loss of steering. Felt like the steering wheel wasn't 'catching' the steering gears.

I look under the mower and notice that the steering sector plate is separated from the pinion gear by about 1/8 inch. They're not even touching (hence, no steering).

Both the sector plate and pinion gear are in great shape - no dings or anything.

What can I do about this? Is there an adjustment that bring the sector plate closer/farther from the pinion gear?

On other brands of tractor there is a bushing on the bottom of the steering shaft. When it fails the 2 gears separate.

    Agree with Rydr

Just had similar issue on a Cub Cadet, this was old vs. new bushing.
