Need assistance with purchase of front mount mower

I am in the market for a new JD 2 wheel drive 72" front mount mower. I was looking online at the 1445 seriesII with the 29hp engine. Went to the dealership to have a look but found out that JD no longer makes that line. They came out with the 1500 series. The 1550 has a new tier 4 engine with 24 hp. The next size is the 1570 with 37hp. This is too much engine for me. The salesman said the 1550 would have no problem with a 72" deck. The 24hp seems to small to me.

Any feedback would be much appreciated.

Morning when it comes to mowing there really is no such thing as too much engine. "speaking of a single engine mounted on a mower for proper mowing, not like that other bunch mounting two and three engines on a mower"
Now more than once folks have underpowered their machine and with the 72" deck you should not even consider the engine smaller than 31HP.
The salesman is way wrong and out of this depth telling you a 24hp is going to handle that machine and 7 iron deck.

It is a diesel. I think it's the same one as in the 1025r but I'm not completely sure.

My thoughts are that it would do OK. My 1025 runs my 60" with no problem. The 24hp diesel with be as torquey as a 35 or so hp gas. Of course it's all relative to your expected ground speed, type of grass, and how tall and thick it will be when you mow.

That 24 hp diesel should have no problem with that deck.....the new "tier 4" diesels in that power range are typically derated to meet Tier 4 Req so as to not require a dpf and urea...probably was 34hp before t4 lol

Thanks guys for the replies. Very helpful.

It is a 24hp diesel on the 1550. As far as getting a demo. No luck. JD are taking orders now with delivery in October.
The longest I will let the grass grow before cutting is 2" .

Met with the salesman today and he assure me it would handle a 72" deck. To get into the next size is the 37hp. (1570) with a $7,000.00 increase in price. I have check with a number of other dealerships and can't get my hands on any 1400 series. Apparently, a hot selling item because of the emission controls.

The dealerships can't get a demo in. JD will only ship if ordered by customer.

The mower that best suited my needs would of been the 1445 with a 30 hp diesel. All I need this unit for is mowing on the farm. Won't need other attachments.

I may just need to hold off until next year to see what reviews are like with this new series.
