Just picked up a John Deere 68 - starting issues

I'm having trouble starting my JD 68. Sometimes I turn the key and the mower does absolutely nothing. No click, no turnover, nothing. Sometimes I turn the key and it immediately turns over and starts right up. Generally there are three things that you can do on a mower that won't allow it to start. It won't start with the blades engaged or if its in gear or if you're not sitting on the seat. I have the seat switch defeated. Is there a switch for the blade engage and for the gear engage? Is there a wiring diagram available that would show how engaging either the transmission or the blades would keep the mower from starting? It does this randomly. I'm thinking this may be an easy fix, but I don't know where these safeties are located. ThanksClick image for larger version.

Download the wiring diagram, they're all heavy on the safety switch end, and check all your connections and grounds. If it will start once it doesn't have a battery issue so it is either a safety switch or a bad connection. If you don't have a test light buy one, and just trace the power until you lose it.

There may be a brake switch.

The brake, neutral and pto switches are the only interlocks on starting. A bad ignition switch can cause similar problems.

The seat switch only comes into play as an engine shutoff if the transmission is taken out of neutral or the pto gets turned on. It does not prevent starting.
    SulleyBear and Lancruza like this.
