    Question How does this work?

    I have the part M166240 (hanger) that is supposed to mount on the deck of a 60HC. It mounts fine but it doesn't hold the PTO like I recall the last one (that broke off) did. Isn't there hanger supposed to fit through the knuckle/joint on the pto shaft?

    I'll try to post a photo of it but I can't get my computer to read my SD card right now.


    Do I have the wrong part for the 60HC or am I using it incorrectly?

    I do not have one of these.......and I may be missing the point.

    But, if you loosen the nut and rotate the hanger 90 degrees clockwise, viewed from the discharge side of the deck, would it work then?

    Looks like that would create a "slot" to capture the shaft. Might have to adjust it and not use all the threads, too, to provide enough opening for the end to fit into.

    Just a thought.

    Hope you get it figured out!

    I would think just bending the PTO shaft coupler the other way at the pivot were the universal joint is located (as shown in the picture) and then sitting the coupler down on the vertical end of the support would hold it. Then the vertical end of the bracket would be up through the coupler and hold it in place.

    It's similar to the way the mount works on the front snow blower, with that driveshaft just resting on it, except the snow blower support uses a round ring on the end of the mount instead of a 90 degree bend with the blunt end.

    Did you look up the actual parts schematic to see if the part shown for your deck matches the part in the plastic bag?

    The part number shows its the support for all of the X7xx series tractors mower decks PTO shafts, whether its the 48" deck, 54" deck or the 60" deck.

    Here is the link to the image showing this part used for the 60" deck. The orientation of the mount is not vertical in the illustration, so the way its shown, the shaft rests on the bent part of the mount instead of having the vertical part of the mount going up through the pto shaft coupling. Could just be the way its illustrated, but its worth a try...

    It's also showing the part numbered 12, which appears to be a separate piece and perhaps what you are missing, its part number M168561 and called a shield.

    The shield you refer to goes on the top of the gear box. It's called a relief valve shield. Key 2 is the relief valve.

    THIS MAY NOT APPLY! I have an x485, 62C deck, so this may not apply. I lay the shaft on the top of the deck when I remove the deck. I do not have this piece. Maybe it's so when you lay the drive shaft on the deck, it will not slide off to the back. I can not tel from your picture if the vertical part is high enough to do that OR maybe your drive shaft will not articulate enough to lay it on the deck, so they had to add the piece?

    Or turn clockwise 1/4 turn, and pivot the coupler toward the rear, instead of the front and drop the shaft on to the part?
    Will the JD engineer that created this part, step forward and explain how it is supposed to work

    My 62C deck ALSO does NOT have this part.

    “Testerg”, I don’t know if you’ve had a chance to look at this since you posted, but in my Operator's Manual there is a picture of the hanger with the PTO shaft resting in it found in the “Installation Instructions”. (Page 18 in my Manual.)

    I was wrong. Rotate the hanger 45 degrees towards the front, not 90.

    In that orientation, the final bend of the hanger creates a “V” for the cylindrical portion of the driveshaft to rest in. The end of the PTO coupler, due to gravity, drops towards the floor between the hanger and the shell of the deck.

    Neat design. Minimal parts. But, it is certainly orientation sensitive in setup as you found.
