Too much slack in LT 166 deck belt.

This is a pain because when I disengage the mower the belt keeps popping off, I leave the covers off the pulleys so I can put the belt back on faster. I now slow the engine speed down and then s l o w l y pull the mower handle down to disengage. Am I missing a part or is there an adjustment I need to make. It used to happen once in a while, now with a new belt it happens more often.

the belt is most likely stretched or the idler pully spring is stretched.

it could also be that the mower engage ment rod isnt tight enough, im not exactly sure how to adjust it tho

Brand new belt, I think when it was new there was a piece missing and it's never been right since. I will check the engagement rod when I take the deck off for the winter.

It could be an idler pulley mounting bracket ready to break. I had that happen on my L130 and the symptoms are that it throws belts.
I have more ideas than ambition.

Since it's done this ever since you've had it, this probably is no help but check and see if there is an acorn or sweetgum ball etc lodged inside one of the pulleys. That will cause the belt to fly off as well.
