    Looking for my first

    Hello
I,m new to the forum and to riding mowers. We are in the process of buying a house on an acre. We are going to need some kind of riding mower. Looking for suggestions.
I,m thinking deck 50 to 60. Probably going to buy used. Budget is around $3000.00 TIA

    First off,

With a budget of $3,000 you'd be looking at a D1xx-series or S240 machine if you are looking for something new. Even the cheapest x300 machine comes in at about $3,200.

Can you give any additional detail on the yard at all? Ifs it flat? Rolling hills? All lawn? Would you be wanting to use this machine for anything else (i.e. snow removal, garden tilling, etc..)? And how adept/willing are you to work on a machine?

*IF* you have a flat-ish lawn and aren't looking to do anything but mow grass, you'll probably be fine with the machines I mentioned above. If you are wanting to do snow removal or ground engaging work, you'd probably be better served looking for a good used 3xx-series, 4xx-series or X4xx/x5xx-series machine (some of those will exceed your $3,000 budget too!).

Front of yard is flat with about 4 trees. A hill down both sides to the back which is also flat. I would like to eventually get a blade or snow thrower.
First one is most likely going to be used.

My suggestion would be to stay away from the G1xx/L1xx/LA1xx/D1xx-series machines as well as the STX30/38 and Sabre machines.

I'm not sure what part of Ohio you're in but I just peeked at Craigslist for the Columbus area - tons of used 212s and a couple of 318s for sale at good prices. In fact, there is a really nice 445 that's a bit over your budget but if I had a way to pick it up, I'd be all over myself.

All of those machines were sold in quantity so there are plenty of them out there. Good, reliable machines and plenty of people that can help you out with any issues. And they'll all handle the sort of stuff you're talking about with ease.

Thanks Jim just the kind of info i was looking for.
A couple people i work with said they have problems with the decks clogging up on their JD mowers. Anyone else have this issue?

I bought a used 455 last year w/<500 hrs for your price after looking and waiting for about 8-9 months. Well worth the wait. Just be ready to jump quick when you find what you want. Go look at a few so you know what you are looking at when the opportunity knocks.Good luck
