new to site problem with 06 la110

My 2006 la110 has a weird problem, every once in awhile while mowing all of a sudden big cloud of smoke. I shut it off then restart everything will be fine, then it might happen or not happen again.macine has always been well maintained, oil is not overfilled also this is not on start up.This unit has 19.5 b+s engine on the fuel pump i see a little oil, this fuel pump is the type with three ports one to carb one to crankcase one from tank. Also i've been reading here about gas cap vent ? maybe something to do with it. also other than this smoke the mower runs good,no odd noises or anything. THANKS

    Hey Charlie, welcome aboard!

First off, by "cloud of smoke" do you mean just a sudden puff of it and then it stops smoking....or does it start smoking and continue smoking until you shut it down?

If simply a momentary puff, can you think of anything at all when you see the cloud of smoke? For example, a truck or automobile will often throw a puff of smoke when shifting gears with a manual transmission. While this has nothing to do directly with the tranny, the sudden load off the engine and sometimes increase in rpm (dependent on how quickly or not so quickly one let off throttle) may throw some smoke. I have seen lawn-tractors and walk behind mowers both throw a puff of smoke when a collection or clumping of clipped wet grass unlodges!

Don't know if that reads well but my point is, when a sudden load is removed from engine allowing rpm to increase, it seems as if some unburned fuel may suddenly ignite with increased rpms.

I'm just trying to brain storm here......

Sounds like a designed pollution control with the fuel pump sucking vapors from the gas tank and the crankcase and sending them to the carb to be burned up in the engine. ...if it has a crankcase filter/breather it could be dirty causing a vacuum in the crankcase which sends the crankcase vapors to the carburetor to get burned or sent passed the rings to be burned in the combustion chamber. .....

Thinking about it if the rings are worn or broke you could be pressurizing your crankcase forcing oil and or vapors to the combustion chamber and carb.... but you say it doesn't happen all the time so I doubt worn or broken rings are the problem.

    problem solved

The problem was head gasket, the gasket was damaged on the square section where push rods are ,compressed air was being pushed into this area, thereby pressurizing crankcase.Installed gasket adj. valves ran about an hour all symptoms cleared up. Thanks to all.
