    X500 purchase ?

    I'm thinking about trading my LT on x500. I see these have heavier transmissions and better over all engines.
    All I'll be doing is light mowing with a steep hill and light snow plowing. How are these mowers holding up? I'll be purchasing new

    I purchased an X540 in 2009 and it's been OK but not great.

    Positives-
    • The steering is fantastic so it's a very agile machine- just a joy to drive.
    • The seat is comfortable and ergonomics are top rate so you can use it for hours without fatigue.
    • The PowerFlow 3 bag system works great. It's very effective sucking up the grass and leaves. Emptying the bags is quite easy too.
    • The engine is reliable, quite powerful and I never lost traction with the diff lock. I strongly recommend adding two JD suitcase weights on the front if you're using a bagger system.
    • The optional deck baffles (bolt on) make a huge difference in effectively sucking up leaves.

    Negatives-
    • The engine always starts with a large puff of smelly smoke. I've learned this is normal for this Kawasaki engine but it's quite annoying. Don't expect to start the engine without using the choke unless it's been running for quite a while. The engine is also quite loud but I suppose all garden tractors may generate similar noise levels.
    • The front tires are wearing unevenly on the inside but there's no way to adjust the camber from what I can determine.
    • The triple bag Powerflow system is poorly designed at the attachment points. The rear lever somehow got bent and gouged deeply into my right rear tire. The huge front plastic belt system cracked at the deck. Also, the belt guards are flimsy and very poorly designed. One belt cut a nice groove into the plastic guard. It's not as if the guard with improperly attached-- it was just poorly designed.
    • The crappy JD battery died and I managed to fry some kind of electronic module in the dashboard while I jump started it - using proper procedures. That cost about $100 plus the cost of a replacement battery as I recall.
    • You simply can't change the oil without making a big sloppy mess with oil running down the side of the frame and dripping on the floor.
    • The high price is difficult to justify. Equipped with the PowerFlow triple bag system, I paid close to $10k with tax as I recall. I suspect most folks are spending less on a 300 series or more on a 700 series. I also own an x720 garden tractor and it's a much better machine in so many ways.

    I purchased the x540 when we lived on a steep 2 acre lot in Georgia. There wasn't too much grass to cut because we had so many trees on the lot. I wanted the x540 to help with the leaves and to tackle the big slope in the front yard since the Honda self propelled mower was just killing me. For that purpose, it was great and probably worth the investment.

    Hiya,

    I'll second Rod330's comment about the x700 series being a huge step up in tractors.

    When I was looking for a tractor for my 3 acres on my mountain, the dealer said he wouldn't sell me anything less than a x540 for my slopes and at that price, I was better off getting an x700 series for the better engine, trans, hydraulics, tires just about everything is upgraded. I almost went with an x750 Diesel but ended up with a 2013 2520 with 30 hours for less than the cost of the x750 so that was a no brainer.

    Look at the x710, if your mowing slopes, it will last a lot longer with it's shaft drive hydrostat.

    PM me, I know of an x710 at a Deere dealer that is priced right with very low hours, you would need to ship, I'll give you the details.

    I got a used 2014 X540 with 4 hours on it. It now has around 150 hours on it. The only problem I had is the front tires are worn out on the outside edge. It will cut 10" tall grass with ease. With the 48" plow she will move snow almost as good as my Wrangler. The water cooled engine is much quieter than my old L108. It is definitely a lot cooler on your feet in the summertime.

    The X500 series is a huge step up from a LT- the 500 series have been around 10 years now and for most part have held up fantastic. Deere will probably run some “incentives” starting Nov 1st if you can wait. If you have any intention of eventually using snow blower, I’d recommend a X530 or x590 and the hydraulics that come with it. Using the foot lift for mowing is no big deal, but if you mount a snow blower it’s a lot of work( BTW the 2 stage 47 inch blower is a snow eating machine) plus you get added benefit of power steering. Once you drive a tractor with power steering you’ll never go back to one without it

    Water cooled is a much better engine , but I'm thinking if he can ,go for a X700 series .

    As Tomd999 said I would check on the the x710 , nicer , heavier and IMO a better mower, will be able to do more with it if the need arrives.

    I'm not sure what the current prices are for x500's but this one looks like a bargain....this one is in Ohio, not sure where you are in Pennsylvania.

    Ok guys talked me into the x710.. The order was placed this morning and hope to arrive from the factory within 2 weeks..
    I've been looking for used plows for the 700 series and many quick connect plows are stating they fit the "xseries" do all the xseries have the same hookup or only certain size series?

    I had the same problem with my new X500 until I read a suggestion on one of the forums. Instead of applying the choke right away, crank the engine over a few times and then while cranking engage the choke as needed. The tractor will fire right up with no smoke.

    I have been starting mine using this method for the past year and have not had a single puff of smoke.
