    Newbie with (I think) an easy question

    Hi all,

    I recently purchased a F935 front mower. It's time to remove the mower and install the snowblower.
    Should the driveshaft spline slide easily in and out? Mine doesn't. I am guessing I should pump some grease into it and try to tap it in and out with a hammer until it slides easily?

    Welcome to DT!

    I dont know anything about the F-series-hopefully some will help soon...but I will try my best.

    If I picked the correct picture from parts, then it look just like a regular PTO shaft so the answer is yes, it should slide easily.

    yes it should slide very easily, you could also try to use some penetrating oil or some used motor oil to break it loose, then slide it out completely and wipe off the shaft with a rag and a degreasing solvent if handy, and then close it completely and pump 4 pumps of grease into the zerk fitting, then move the the shaft in and out to work the grease in.



    actually it looks like a roll pin is holding it in place in the picture from parts... could you take a picture of the shaft to make sure we are right. it is possible it is a fixed shaft

    I will try to get a picture tommorrow, but my driveshaft doesn't look like the one in kennyd's parts illustration.
    No pin in mine, and it has a spline that sides into the driveshaft just like one in an automobile. The penetrating oil is a good idea. I have plenty of PB Blaster.

    I just got picked up a John Deere F935 with a flail mower attachment. needed to get the mower off to get it in my trailer... and had the same problem trying to get it off. i've done quite a bit of searching on the web, but can't seem to find a simple explanation on how to remove an attachment.

    The shaft slipped out almost all of the way, but when I got to the end it jammed. there was a small hole at the top of tube that covers the spline which I thought maybe was a stripped out set screw, so i drilled that out... but i still couldn't remove the shaft.

    As you can see from the second photo i finally got so frustrated that i took off the whole gear box (it's still on the flail mower), and i'm pretty sure that's not how you're supposed to remove the attachment.

    I'm thinking that i have the same kind of set up as the other guy that posted...

    any help would be verrrrrrry appreciated!

    Thanks Kenny!

    I figured there was some sort of set screw in the shaft, bit i couldn't get an allen wrench in it (i'm thinking maybe it was stripped out?). I tried to put a screw extractor in the hole to back it out, but it wouldn't budge so i finally drilled what was left of it out. i know that the hole goes all the way thru to the spindle as when i spray some WD40 in there it comes out along the spindle... but perhaps there is still a bit of the set screw edge still stuck in there holding things up.

    actually what i should be asking: is this where i should be trying to remove the flail attachment? - basically i don't need it and want to fully remove it along with all the pieces that should go with it.

    by the way, if you know of anyone in northern california that needs a Danl flail mower attacment (probably around 5'-6' wide?) be sure to let me know as i need to get rid of it.

    Best advice I can give you Paul is to register at www.jdparts.com and possibly get some manuals from the dealer of even eBay they turn up often. I have never seen a flail on the F-series.
