Deere Hunt - JD 450 Tiller and 455 GT

I have a 455 GT with a rear PTO and a 3 point hitch so I have been looking for a JD 450 tiller. There is a guy 10 miles from my house who has a 450 tiller, but he wants $1700 for it. A little too much.

My JD bird dog buddy called me last Sunday on his way to church to tell me he found a 450 tiller on CL. The only problem was the tiller was attached to a JD 455. I always told my buddy if I found another 455 at a good price, I would buy it in a heartbeat. Well my heart beat happened. The guy was firm at $4000 which was a very good price for the tractor and tiller. He did not speak good English so his wife translated for me. He was the original owner of the 1997 tractor which had only 1054 hours. That was good. I asked him if he had the manuals and he produced a manual for the tractor, deck and tiller. All in like new condition. A big plus! First, I had to remove the chains on the rear wheels. Since I live near Atlanta, these will be sold on eBay. A plus worth around $50. I had to remove the 60" deck because it was too wide for my trailer. We put it in the back of my pickup. I noticed 5 JD suitcase weights in his garage. I asked him if they went with the tiller. He said "You take". A big plus worth about $250. I asked him if he ever changed the hydro fluid. He said "Just service". The deck had NEW blades and he had a FULL service on the tractor a couple weeks ago. A plus probably around $300. I always change all of the fluids in any tractor I buy so this was a real nice plus.

He was moving to a retirement home in NJ. so he was selling all of his tools for $2000. I told him I had more tools than he did and was not interested. He told me to take a 5 gallon bucket in his garage. He said "Surprise for you". The bucket had some rope on top, but underneath I found a nice chain hoist. Another plus $50.

After the tractor was loaded, he came out of his garage with two yellow 5 gallon diesel containers. He said "You take, one full". The tractor was also FULL of fuel. Another plus of around $50. I borrowed a sledge hammer to adjust one of the stake pockets on my trailer. I tried to give it back to him but he said "You take". The longer I stayed there, the more stuff I got free. I believe I received about $800 worth of pluses.

I have bought five 4X5 tractors, but this is the first time the side reflectors were still on the tractor. I do have to replace one tail light which I have a spare for that. I could probably sell the 455 and mower deck for $4000 soooo............. The tiller and pluses cost me nothing. That is my story and I am sticking to it.

    A good day of hunting.

WOW, some guys have all the luck!

I really want a 455 also, but a $4000 one 'round here is beat to death, nice ones are $6000.

    Kenny,

This is the nicest used 455 that I have ever seen. The only fixing it needs is the right tail light. The seat has two small cracks and that is all. I do like the 455 model and this is my 3rd one that I own at the present time. A 455 with a 3 point hitch and rear PTO usually are close to $5K down hear. That is IF you can find one. As I drove home yesterday with my newest 455, I was kind of thinking I need to sell one. That feeling disappeared 10 minutes after I got this one home. I be .

Wow gotdeeres! Nice find and what a great collection you have! I'm truly envious. Seems like the only thing missing from my dream collection list is a 430.

I think the 455 is the only tractor I would give my 332 up for. I had a chance to buy a super clean 455 last year with 800 hours on it for $4800 with the 60" deck. I still regret not buying it, but I was laid off at the time and didn't think it was the smart thing to do.

    I would also love to have a 455. I have a 445 now, and it's great, but a 455......would be awesome.

    Life is good in Buford.

Mr. Kreatsoulas (Caller ID I could have never spelled it) called me today and said he found 5 or 6 sets of blades for the mower deck. Two of them were new. He asked if I wanted them. Let me think, another $100 of pluses. I will pick them up tomorrow. Wonder if he has any more surprises.

I finally rounded up my 455 herd for a family picture. The reason I have three 455's is that I make money with them. I do small landscaping and grading jobs. The tractors have all paid for themselves. I counted up my suitcase weights and I now have 19. Five on the tiller 455, 9 on the loader 455 and 5 on my 2210. That is a lot of pig iron.

I have a grading contract ($750 per year) for the gravel golf cart paths in my subdivision.

Last winter we had a snow and ice storm that shut Atlanta down for more that a week. I cleared my drive and a couple others with my Mini-Loader. Another neighbor asked me if I wanted to make some money. He was the service manager for a large car dealer and could not get anyone to clear their lot. In 6 hours I was done and he gave me $650. I have nine suitcase weights on the 455 and fluid in ALL the tires. I stopped to take this picture not because I could not push more snow. No CHAINS.
