Grass wrapped MFWD shaft on 2320

Back again. So the grass got tall while I was dealing with the hydraulic pipe repair. The MFWD shaft got completely wound up in grass. Took an hour to clean out. Now iím worried about the front seal as I thought I saw something drip from that location. I canít seem to locate the right diagram for ordering the part. There is a rubber shield covering the shaft at that location so hard to see if the seal is compromised but the grass I pulled out was slightly black. Didnít seem too tightly packed in the front but the back was difficult to clean out.

How would I check the front and back seals? What parts diagram would these be located in. Yes, Iíve looked but no luck finding them so far.

Being a newbie I had no idea this could happen. I noticed an extreme lack of power and the forward pedal seemed stiff. Ran so much better today after the clean out. Ran with the bucket low, low ,low to knock down the grass in advance. Any tricks to avoid this happening again? Just praying the seals are ok. Will look for tell tale puddles tomorrow. Didnít know this could cause seal failure until I got home from cutting. This site is invaluable to us novices but at the same time it scares the crapola out of me every time I see post about another 2320 catastrophe.

Starting to feel a little discouraged since I seem to be spending more time under the tractor than on it. Click image for larger version.†

This is what my tractor looked like last week. Is this what splitting looks like? Not sure about that term but I know I want to avoid it.

Is there No sheild around the front shaft?

My 955 has a simple 2 piece driveline sheild ...I figured all tractors had them

I have no clue why the text is underlined either?

Hot foot--are u missing the cover off ur front drive line??

now i might be wrong about this-but i thought our drive line did not turn unless u was in 4 wheel drive?

so in my mind u must of been in 4 wheel drive-with out the cover on-right

i have owned my 2520 since 2006--i have brush hogged places where the grass was taller than the hood, and run thru that stuff in 4 wheel drive---never ever have i had to pull grass wrapped up like u showed.

now for a while i had the shield off my 4 ft brush hog waiting on parts-and decided to mow-mistake for sure--yelp i got to use the cutting knife then.

think u need a front line shield cover for ur tractor. good luck-u done a heck of a job putting it all back together

The front drive shaft turns all the time on all MFWD tractors. This is because the front hubs are engaged full time. The only thing that happens when you put it in 4X4 is the rear of the shaft gets coupled to the transmission.

He should have the little front rubber boot over the front universal joint shown below. While it serves to protect the U-joint, I don't think this would really prevent grass or some other long weed from wrapping itself around the shaft while it is turning.

Yep, got that rubber cover but it didnít stop the grass from wrapping. Seals were ok. Just paranoid after the hydraulic line job.
All is well. Learning how to operate an orange excavator today. Plumber quoted me 5,500 bucks to dig a 600ft ditch for a main water line. Guess he really didnít want the job. Got half of it dug today. It ainít purty but the price is right. Going to use my green toy to bed the 2Ē pvc in sand. Got lots of rocks.

Got a short rubber shield over the front u-joint and seal. Is that it? Didnít stop the wrapping though. Iím on hilly terrain so I stay in 4 wheel drive. Might be rethinking that though. Seals okay.

They were fine. Thanks. Iíll be paying closer attention in the future. Grass was still moist. That might have contributed to the wrapping. Had been three days since last rain but it was tall.
