    Gravely li

Ok so i got a gravely LI and cannot get spark through any spark plug.. So if you ground the end of the plug wire it will make a nice blue spark but then i put a plug on and no spark. I have a new one coming. Just wondering.

IIRC, the old LI's have a magneto on them for spark. I had an old L years ago. It was a temperamental beast and I've avoided them since it died and I got rid of it. My current Gravely's have either a Kohler or the twin-cylinder Briggs on them. CADPlans also has a few Gravely's, but I think his are newer too. (Kind of funny referring to a mid-80's piece of equipment as "newer" )

I'd suggest calling Richard's Gravely in West Virginia and ask them if no one here has an answer. Those guys know EVERYTHING about the old Gravely's and will probably be able to give you an answer right off the top of their heads.

If they suggest rebuilding the magneto, you can probably send it to them or you might be able to find a local aircraft mechanic that has a resource to rebuild them. The engines in a large number of small aircraft (Cessna's, etc.) use magneto's in their ignition systems.

Be sure to post up whatever the problem/solution turns out to be. There might not be a ton of people interested, but I am.

I have owned the magneto sparked Gravely's,,
AND, I have helped MANY neighbors get their old Gravely's running again,,

I do have a trick to get the Gravely back to sparking correctly,, without using a screwdriver to disassemble anything

Find a socket that fits the nut holding the flywheel on,,
    remove the sparkplug,,,

get a drill chuck/socket adapter, and chuck the adapter into your biggest drill.
(I have a 600 RPM Porter Cable 1/2" chuck drill that works perfectly)

Now,, take the drill and socket,, and spin the Gravely engine over until you get a good spark,,
no need to open the magneto and clean the points,,
turning the engine with the drill will clean the points enough to get the engine ready to run,,
sometimes this takes 3-4 minutes of turning,,,

My drill is quite powerful,, I can actually put the spark plug back in the engine,, and start the engine with the drill.
BUT,, the drill gotta be a little more powerful than the $19 Harbor Freight Special,,,

OH, YEA,, be READY to pull the drill off the end of the engine when the engine starts,,,
OR,, BE READY TO RUN AWAY,,,,
Some of the tractors include JD 4105, JD 855, JD 650,,,, and,,, the IH 584 4WD
My favorite attachment is the homemade landplane,,, EVERYONE needs one of those!!

Ok I got her running but I believe it has a stuck/ cracked piston ring. It will fog the shop with oil smoke and then it will clear up for a while
