    Days Gone By...................

Post in this thread about Days Gone By. Things of long ago. Below are some of the examples:

    • History of your Village, City, Town, State, or Country.
    • A person, or organization.
    • Memories of yesteryear.
    • Thing you have experienced, or remember as a child/young adult.
    • Places you been that no longer exist.

This is a place I remember that no longer exist. Pontchartrain(pahn-cha-trayn) Beach Amusement Park. It was built in 1928.
Our parents used to take us the when we were young.

After we married, Wife(Pat) and I would take our son there as a toddler. It shut down and was dismantled in 1983, before our daughter was born, but we tell her stories of the good time we all had there.

Below is a video of when Pontchartrain Beach Amusement Park was closed.

    Now it's your turn.

This is the second video I came across here on GTT and both were nothing but a black square. Something isn't working right.

So here is something about my little town of Leeds Maine that I can add. We have a civil war PEACE monument that was erected by General Oliver Otis Howard.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oliver_Otis_Howard

Hailing from Leeds in Androscoggin County, Oliver Otis Howard commanded a Union brigade at First Manassas and fought throughout the Civil War. He later led the Freedmen’s Bureau, which assisted former slaves seeking better lives in the South.

After the Civil War, Oliver Otis Howard and his brothers Charles and Roland led the effort to build a memorial atop Otis Hill in Leeds. Named the Leeds Peace Monument, the simple granite obelisk still stands atop what is now called Monument Hill.

Here are some pictures from last spring, the first time my father, neighbor and I flew the new flag. When I was a Boy Scout many moons ago, I hiked this trail near my house every morning to raise the flag, then again every evening to lower it. I did this all throughout my school years, into high school and still am part of it today. It's not a huge mountain to climb; a 800' hill really, but has a couple of steep rises to a granite ledge that gives a beautiful view to the west. On a clear day, the Presidential range in NH is prominent.

I've spent many years enjoying this special spot. Many summer nights were spent sleeping under the stars there with my friends. It's a great tribute to the men from Leeds who fought. I think it's special that it was erected after the war as a symbol of peace.

    My home town

Here's a video about my home town; the museum is about half the size of the town. I went to high school with the bald headed guy; he is a retired bank president (we didn't have a bank in out little town), and also on the State Board of Regents. Needless to say, the meteor hit a long time before I lived there, and there are a lot of poor farmers who aren't poor any more because of the oil.

    Have wings, will travel.
