Just a reminder , may save someones life..

    Stroke has a new indicator

They say if you e.mail this to ten people, you stand a chance of saving one life. Will you send this along?

Blood Clots/Stroke - They Now Have a Fourth Indicator, the Tongue

I will continue to forward this every time it comes around!

    image001.jpg

    STROKE: Remember the 1st Three Letters..... S. T. R.

    STROKE IDENTIFICATION:

During a BBQ, a woman stumbled and took a little fall - she assured everyone that she was fine (they offered to call paramedics) ...she said she had just tripped over a brick because of her new shoes.

They got her cleaned up and got her a new plate of food. While she appeared a bit shaken up, Jane went about enjoying herself the rest of the evening.

Jane's husband called later telling everyone that his wife had been taken to the hospital - (at 6:00 PM Jane passed away.) She had suffered a stroke at the BBQ. Had they known how to identify the signs of a stroke, perhaps Jane would be with us today. Some don't die. They end up in a helpless, hopeless condition instead.

It only takes a minute to read this.

A neurologist says that if he can get to a stroke victim within 3 hours he can totally reverse the effects of a stroke...totally. He said the trick was getting a stroke recognized, diagnosed, and then getting the patient medically cared for within 3 hours, which is tough.

    RECOGNIZING A STROKE

Thank God for the sense to remember the '3' steps, STR. Read and Learn!

Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victim may suffer severe brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke.

Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions:

S *Ask the individual to SMILE.

T *Ask the person to TALK and SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE (Coherently)

(I.e. It is sunny out today.)

R *Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS.

If he or she has trouble with ANY ONE of these tasks, call emergency number immediately and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher.

New Sign of a Stroke -------- Stick out Your Tongue

NOTE: Another 'sign' of a stroke is this: Ask the person to 'stick' out his tongue. If the tongue is 'crooked', if it goes to one side or the other that is also an indication of a stroke.

A cardiologist says if everyone who gets this e-mail sends it to 10 people; you can bet that at least one life will be saved.

I have done my part. Will you?

That's not exactly correct. While based in fact so far, in the 10 years, hasn't proven to be that good of indicator of a stroke. There are much better signs to look for.
From Snopes.com, the Internet hoax site:

While getting appropriate medical care for a stroke victim as soon as possible is extremely important, doing so does not come with a 100% guarantee that a stroke identified and treated within a 3-hour timeframe will not cause permanent damage.

The warning signs of a stroke are:

Sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm, or leg, especially on one side of the body.

Sudden confusion, trouble speaking, or understanding.

Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes.

Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination.

Sudden, severe headache with no known cause.

Ergo, for once there's a "Send this to everyone you know!" missive afoot that really does contain highly useful and important information. Yet the Internet, while sometimes used to disseminate actual fact (such as the above), is also often used to spread utter nonsense.
You can read more about it here: snopes.com: Three Simple Tests to Detect a Stroke

Anytime an email says send to everyone you know, or to X number of people it's usually some type of hoax or contains a lot of misinformation. I wonder why people start stuff like that when it doesn't take much time to get the true facts. I'm not ripping on you Gene, I feel you were just duped into spreading a little misinformation that seemed to be true.

You can also look at their eyes. Oftentimes, a stroke victim will have unequal pupils, meaning one can appeal dilated and the other constricted, or smaller. Look at the overall person, and use all of the above. If any of those signs are present, might be worth a trip to the doctor or hospital to be checked, to be safe.

It also depends on the type of stroke for recovery. TIA or transient Ischimic Attack, will show all the signs of a full blown stroke but typically will subside fairly quickly. This is a warning of a potential pending full blown stroke and still needs immediate care. It is important to relay a much info called out above to the attending as the symptoms upon arrival (at least with my Dad) had disipated to the point the Doctor thought nothing was wrong.I was an EMT at that point and kept pushing the doc to check more. They did and found it was a minor TIA. Treatment was begun and he lived another 17 years. More TIAs and finally a full blown stroke took him. But he was very healthy and happy in those years. So pay attention to this and your loved ones. It can mean a great deal.
Thanks Gene. It is the thought that counts.
