Sad to hear, didn't realize he was 82.

Interesting story about that, the gent Steve Mandell that played the guitar part live nearby, and always came to the Bluegrass concerts we have at my neighbors barn (I do the sounds there). He recently died as well.

I liked Burt in Sharkey's Machine with Rachel Ward (hubba hubba and that voice )........Also, he was good as the Indian (Native American) blacksmith, Quint, in Gunsmoke..Having him paired with Sally Fields and with Jackie Gleason for Smokey and the Bandit was what made that movie so great. Of course, the sequel, Smokey and the Bandit 2 wasn't quite as good and when Burt passed on 3, it was destined to mediocrity at best.

Burt's role in Boogie Nights, brought back his career and it was a great performance. It was what he needed and the role needed him. Look at the stars which that movie helped launch. Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Mark Wahlberg, Don Cheadle, Julianne Moore, John C, Reilly (who I don't care for as an actor) among several others.

Of course, as the hard charging leader of the group in Deliverance, his character really altered the outcome of that trip in the movie. Had Lewis not been there, Ed, Bobby and Drew would have had even poorer outcomes, not that Drew had a happy ending......Good movie and Burt was perfect for that role. I get that role wasn't too different from how he was in his real life at that time. Hard charging and taking the lead.....

Burt was in over 50 movies during his career.

He was good as Sam Whiskey with Clint Walker (who also recently died, he was best known for his series as Cheyenne Body) and Angie Dickinson and Ossie Davis.

How about 100 Rifles with Raquel Welch? What a stunning Beauty Raquel Welch has always been. Natural beauty, not silicone and plastic beauty. I saw recent photo's of her and she still looks very, very good. I just watched both Sam Whiskey and 100 Rifles over the Labor Day weekend.

Burt was a good actor. I knew he had been struggling lately with his health as I saw where the two guys who search for antiques and barn finds in the van from Missouri. Frank and the other dude..... had showed up at his estate gates to see him on one of their shows and he was having trouble then.....and that was a few years ago....Sad to see.

Sadly, the tabloids have been showing photos of him in his declining health now for years and always predicting his demise. Very unnecessary and mean spirited. I really wish they wouldn't do that. The tabloids had been predicting his demise for at least the last 10 years. There must have been 25 different "Rag" mags where the headlines were "Burt near death" and they would show some terrible photo of him. There was even a big scandal that he had AIDS about 15 years ago, because he was so thin, which was just more of their horrible tabloid rag journalism.

As people age, some age gracefully and many don't. To constantly be comparing them to their "prime years" appearance and photographs is pointless. And it's mean. That ship has sailed and will never return. I don't need some paparazzi chasing aging celebrities only to post their photos and mock and ridicule them in their aging process. Getting old is rough and rougher for some than others.

I remember when I thought 82 was old. Now, it's not that old.........Thanks for the memories, Burt......
