It is never a surprise to me to hear of another corporate hack. ("Put all your data 'in the cloud' with us!")The criminals are smarter and have more single purpose time than the IT guys that take care of companies (governments). Since caveman times when Ogg took a stick and beat Oof over the head and took his stash of roots and dead meat, we have been subject to the lawless. It's a "human nature thang" and always will be until the species is extinct.

Seems that the Fickle Finger of Fate is once again pointing to China! "Very clever those Chinese" (old derogatory phrase used back in the days when one could speak his mind!)

Don't even get me started on the health insurance industry. To make matters worse, the federal government ie Medicare requires all physicians to utilize an EHR (electronic health record) or they are penalized on their payments. So basically what we have now is every person that goes to a physician with one these systems is a potential data breach.

The sad thing is that we are all in the same boat no matter what. It just being a matter of time until they get you somewhere, somehow. I sure would hope folks out there in "Techland" are doing the same thing right back at the politically motivated hackers. If nothing else, find the locations of the operations-servers and air mail 'em Tomahawks (with all the serial and parts numbers filed off).

Agreed that's only a matter of time for any of us to be affected by something like this.

I've set up some protection for myself and prudent in how I use my credit and/or debit cards. One thing that works great for me is I get an email from my credit union whenever a transaction takes place in all my accounts - within 20 minutes. There isn't much anyone can do to prevent something like these Anthem/Home Depot etc. hacks so the next best thing is to monitor your account vigilantly. They say that as long as you report any discrepancies right away you aren't liable. But that doesn't account for all the hassle of changing accounts or credit card numbers or the real mess of a stolen identity.

I have adopted a new philosophy for myself - cash is king. Since going through what I did the last 3 years I don't have enough money to keep in the bank anyway. I've resorted to using cash for everything possible. I can't stop the requred direct deposits but the money is sucked out into cash right away. Also, any kind of a disruption of services (power outage - internet down) you don't have access to your money or will credit/debit cards work. The systems are ever so fragile that it won't take much of anything to separate you from your money in the bank. To me money in a bank is merely numbers displayed on a computer monitor. Cash is king!
