I knew wheat farming had changed a lot, but I didn't realize how much until I watched this video...and I did watch it, all the way through. I signed on with a custom cutting crew back in ancient times, and we cut a swath through Oklahoma and up through Kansas. We had two Baldwin/Gleaner open combines with big...fourteen foot headers. These combines looked to have something like 30 foot headers. We couldn't cut at night; the wheat got very tough when it got damp and the machine wouldn't handle it. You only have to have one bind up a couple of times, and have to pull the straw out of the innards before you get the hint.

In those days, though, the wheat was tall...I've seen it over six feet tall, so we ate a lot of straw...and I'm wondering what they think a poor yield is. Where I lived in Oklahoma, in the sand hills, a thirty bushel yield was very good...but in Northern Oklahoma and Kansas, forty was average, or below. We cut some volunteer in Kansas that averaged over thirty.

The enclosed, air conditioned cab is a wonderful advancement. You ate a lot of dust and chaff in those old open combines; and goggles seemed to work for about an hour and then you just threw them away. The machinery in this video probably cost more than a section of land in the 1950's and 60's. Great video. I enjoyed it immensely.
    Have wings, will travel.

First one I've seen. Background music almost transports this into being an action/adventure. Never thought about how huge those machines really are. Knew farmers had $$$$$ tied up in equipment, but this really highlights it. Thanks for the link!

Great vids!! I also watched "The LaRosh Story" video. Pretty cool.

That video and the 2015 harvest video show the 1959 JD 55 combine that might bring back a memory or two to 2Lane.
